Home Security for Retirees

Our backyard faces a bunch of bushes and the neighbors’ backyards. I doubt anyone would bother peering at us tgroufh bushes, especially since several neighbors have dogs which do bark.

I like windows and only draw drapes when we are going to sleep or out.

We pull shades and close blinds because we do not want to see the blackness at night. It has nothing to do with others seeing in.

We just installed motion activated cameras into our existing security lights. When we built the house about 20 years ago, we put in motion activated lights under the eaves at the corners and large stretches - six double lights in total. H just retrofitted them with new lights/cameras that go along with an app. I can now see any of the positions on my phone in real time, and I also get an alert if motion is detected. The quality is great - high res and color. There is also one-way voice so I can speak to whomever is outside. I haven’t needed to use that feature, but it’s great for just seeing who is at the front door, since it’s a big house, and will alert us to an intruder before they attempt to break in, and I can use the app from anywhere and don’t have to be home.

We also have a full house alarm system, but I think this is much better.

@Gourmetmom Which brand did you buy?

@chercheur The brand is Sengled. One minor hiccup is that the lights must be set either in the motion detector mode, or on all the time. We mostly used the old lights in the motion mode, but occasionally would leave the front one on if we were expecting guests after dark, but it’s not a big deal since it will still go on when anyone starts coming up the front walkway.

Thanks, @Gourmetmom !
