jhl - my question to you was not meant to be unkind - I was truly curious to know how you might be different from our teens. It might be that your unique experiences would provide material for a truly interesting essay.

worknprogress- i know you weren’t unkind… I know an essay just introducing about brunei but not myself would be disastrous… I’ll talk mostly about myself in an experience hopefully unique to brunei… I just don’t wanna disclose my essay topic in a forum… Thanks…

So coming from brunei is a hook?

No, it isn’t. As I wrote previously, at best it will be a tip factor for you. A tip is a very slight advantage whereas a hook is something that substantially obviates weaknesses.

I’m certain that being from Brunei will be a slight help. Yale, like most other schools, love to boast that they have students from X amount of different countries, and if they can up that number, they will certainly look at your application with more interest.

I definitely hope so… I wouldn’t say i’m a strong applicant or a weak applicant… But i hope this fact makes me stand out…

Being from Brunei will help, but it is much more the region and demographics that you grow up in. What you can offer Yale as far as diversity. Simply coming from a small, obscure country means little. It’s only a name.

Yeap i know that fact
