People have misconceptions. Here are the facts based on a widespread survey at Duke:
[Sex, Love and Celibacy by Bridget Booher-November/December 2010](<a href=“Duke Mag”>Duke Mag)

75% response rate (definitely statistically valid and representative of student body)
Overall: 1/3 in relationships, 1/3 participated in a hookup (defined as kissing or more with somebody outside a romantic relationship), 1/3 neither

Freshman:
~35% hookup - again, defined as kissing or more
~20% relationship - committed, monogamous
~45% neither

Seniors:
~30% hookup
~43% relationship
~27% neither

Current students also had the same misconception as you (i.e. thought more people hooked up than was actually the case).
