Hormone Replacement Therapy

I hate it because it’s not what you weigh. I recently lost 10 lbs, my goal. As I was doing it, I wanted to make sure my bathroom scales were correct. So, I put my 5lb and 8lb. Weights on it to make sure it was calibrating correctly.

I only weight myself every 10-14 days, as I know water weight can make it fluctuate. I weighed myself first thing naked. Then I went downstairs and had 2 cups of coffee. Weighed myself after and it was solid pound more…with just coffee!

I weight clothing a lot to sell on eBay. It’s amazing how much clothing weighs. So, if you leave on your shoes and clothing, you are adding about 5 pounds at least and that’s without heavier clothing line sweaters or jeans. Your shoes alone are 1lbs. If you’ve eaten and had anything to drink before getting weighed, add another 2-3 pounds.

I think the office scales are about 5-10 pounds more than you really weigh.

Not wanting to get on the scale keeps me from going to doctor’s appointments as well (if it’s something serious, I go but not so much for routine stuff or stuff that’s bothering me but not life-threatening). Kudos to those who say no to being weighed each time!

I’m on a glp-1 and have been losing weight but I still get discouraged if they weigh me and I’ve only gone down a couple of lbs. plus, different scales have different calibrations. I’ll always pick the one that says I’ve lost the most!

Not allowed here. Big signs (at several places I go) that say that at the scale. It might be a department of health rule.

This weighing at the doctor conversation is really interesting to me. I’m glad that we can share here.

I can understand the weighing on certain occasions. But at EVERY appt for EVERY type of doc ….I have said before when being brought to the scale… “are we still doing this weighing thing?” Or “I was just at a doc appt last month - why do we have to do it again?”

Add me to the list. It stresses me out for weeks in advance. And I know I can say no - and I do at the GYN - but that stresses me out too. Actually, the last few times the GYN nurses have been OK with it, but other places I get the big eyeroll from the nurse. (I am not large with a 20 BMI, but it messes with my head.) And I just don’t want to be “that person.” I like being the little rule follower, so going against that stresses me out.

I can understand before surgery, where it’s critical to get the anesthesia right. But otherwise? For any medications I might need (I’m not on any prescrips), anyone can glance at me and see I’m a normal average person. And as far as gaining/losing weight without wanting to, I’d know that myself and let you know. It’d be a reason I’d show up in the first place!

There is no reason to be weighed at most visits unless you are being put on new medication, or there is specific concern about weight being lost without meaning to lose. Last time I went in they asked me if I wanted to be weighed and I said no thanks, I monitor at home, and we moved on. It was such a relief!! I do not understand why this is still a thing, especially when we all know people who don’t get health care because they don’t want to get weighed.

All this getting weighed talk reminded me of a couple of friends of mine who were on their respective colleges’ dance /pom pom/drill squads. This would have been early to mid 80s. They both had a required weigh in every week. One of the squads required weekly weigh-ins in front of the football team.

The other friend (at a different college) had a weight limit to be allowed to perform. 100 lbs for five feet tall. 5 lbs for each inch over that. She is 5’1” tall. If she weighed in above 105, she couldn’t perform that week.

And, we wonder why women our ages have so many self-worth issues about weight.

Sorry folks, it was me that started the “getting weighed” tangent, I didn’t mean to move off topic! But someone had mentioned their discomfort about getting weighed and I couldn’t help it!

Anyway, one more comment, last year at my PCP appt, at some point in the appointment my provider said “oh! I didn’t get your weight!!”. And I told her, no, I didn’t get weighed, I never do. To which she replied “oh, but why, you’re not fat!!!”

“Well…then I guess I didn’t need to be on the scale then, do I?”

It’s just silly and I can’t even begin to express the relief I have not worrying about getting weighed. Which is dumb, I know, and I appreciate knowing I’m not alone in this dumb stressor!

I am with everyone on the weight thing. I have monitored my weight regularly over my adult life. I weigh XXX +/- 10# depending if life is making me ‘fat’ or ‘skinny.’ I have been consistent with that weight range for most of my adult life. I am not too fat, I am not too skinny.

But as a girl of the ‘70s, I recall hitting 100#, I recall being mortified to weight 125# etc. I know that my life and my body have ranges and waves of being fatter or not. I don’t need to freeze frame a doc visit on a fat day.

I now tell them, “no thank you” and am happy to do so. I know way way more about my build than they do and I will tell them my weight if asked.

“No thank you” is my response also! Never have they said anything about it, just move on to my height and that’s that.

Back to HRT, my gyn has always pulled out the “risk of breast cancer” card, and only prescribed Estradiol vag cream for me. I fell out of the habit of using it regularly . Recently getting back on the wagon, since I seem to be having some urinary symptoms that I’ll chalk up to menopause (because, it feels like everything ALWAYS comes back to that lately :roll_eyes:). I might just push harder on my gyn, who I really do like, based on some of your comments. I’ve got a regular checkup in a month or two (and won’t get weighed :rofl:).

I’ve been talking with a friend whose 91 year father, who is in assisted living, now has a 73 female friend who just moved from independent to assisted (she has Parkinsons). They were walked in on by an aide - the naked female friend sitting on the 91 year old’s lap. That got us on the discussion of STDs in retirement communities. And after reading this thread, I wonder if a lot of these women are on HRT (because I can’t imagine being interested in sex if I am 73, have Parkinson’s, and am in assisted living!)

A few years ago, a doctor prescribed Estradiol for me. I filled the prescription, read the ingredients and lengthy drug description/fact sheet, and threw it away. I understand the medical community looks at this therapy differently than in the past and that today’s formulations are not the same as the earlier ones that caused the concern, but I’m just not comfortable with it. But I also don’t have any symptoms that disrupt my daily living, and I guess I’m too old for HRT now. :old_woman:

Ok, I keep getting ads for Silky Peach Cream on Facebook. I must have clicked on it once. It has Estriol. Any thoughts on that product. I also missed the HRT boat.

More info is out lately questioning the traditional line that one can be ‘too late’ for HRT. Just a thought (know it doesn’t respond to the direct question!)
