Hostages taken in a cafe in Sydney.

Sometimes people have a violent past with little or no jail time.

“Why was he not locked up?”

Was out on bail per CNN.

Off topic a bit, but I never realized Sydney is only seven hours ahead of CDT. Just shows you how off my geography is.

BB, I know that he was out on bail. The question is- WHY?! He was indicted in a murder and had 40 sexual assault, etc cases pending against him. He was clearly a violent individual and likely a disturbed psychopath.

Some of the questions then might be how much of an issue is prison overcrowding, how long a sentence on average is served for which crimes, and how much of a danger does reduced time served pose to the general population.

<a href=“Australia's prison system overcrowded to bursting point with more than 33,000 people in jail - ABC News”>http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-02/austrlaian-prison-overcrowding-female-populations-growing/5567610</a></p>

Bail laws.

The flag in the window said “The only God is God and his prophet is Muhammed”. BTW, I took the information about his headband from the Daily Mail story that described it that way and included a somewhat blurry photo of the guy.

“Off topic a bit, but I never realized Sydney is only seven hours ahead of CDT. Just shows you how off my geography is.”

Eh?

Sydney would be 17 hours ahead of US Central time. It’s 6:20am (Dec 16th) there now.

I don’t understand why he was out on bail either. Or why earlier he wasn’t deported. I thought Australia was strict in its immigration laws.

It is unclear if the police reacted to gunshots or stormed the coffee shop, but the image of a police officer throwing some type of grenades after several already entered the place is rather disturbing. Considering that there was one gunman, it seems that a bunch of policemen trying to enter at the same might have created more harm than good. It probably brings about the question on when relying on a sniper versus larger numbers of officers is warranted. And makes you wonder why we keep insisting on capturing such vermine alive.

Thank you. I swear I heard someone on one of the news channels say seven and I couldn’t wrap my head around it. It wasn’t a newscaster, but some person they were interviewing in AZ who had a relative who worked near the area. I must have just heard the seven, and not the teen. I know enough people who have had kids study abroad there and have heard how difficult it is to find a time to talk, so when I heard seven, I thought it didn’t sound right (but God forbid, anyone on TV be wrong).

why we keep insisting on capturing such vermine alive.
I imagine to get more information about similar threats, like in September of this year.

“Thank you.”

You’re welcome.

I have a ton of friends in Oz and so I know the difference all too well. At first I thought you meant CET but that is more than a 7 hours difference, too.

ABC news said those were flash grenades, non lethal devices intended to distract the gunman. Who knows, maybe they worked and saved a few lives.

Very tragic.
<a href=“Cafe Manager And Young Barrister Killed In Sydney Hostage Drama”>http://www.buzzfeed.com/markdistefano/hostage-victims-identified</a></p>

The news conference by the Prime Minister is remarkable. He is talking about the resolve, the stoicism, the decency and also about the generosity of the Australian people. One reason to believe that ultimately the civilized world will survive the attacks of radicals and the nuts who follow them and execute their acts of terror.

Australia has a government to be proud of.

Very sad to read about the two innocent victims…both heroes.

As sad as I am for the helpless people that got killed, I am glad that the gunman was killed. He probably would have killed them anyway. The only way these extremist Muslims are going to be stopped is by killing them, harsh as it is. They’re fanatics - you can’t reason with them. I know they say this gunman wasn’t technically part of ISIS, but let’s call a spade a spade. This whole thing is terrible.

Sure. Let’s call a spade a spade. He was clearly a very disturbed individual and had a very violent history. Honestly, it’s unlikely that his religion had anything to do with this and it is likely something he just latched on to.

In Western society, when we see a crazy person who is Christian, he’s crazy. When he’s Arabic, he’s clearly a radical hellbent on destruction.

It’s so interesting to me that the religion of the shooter in Pennsylvania hasn’t come up at all in any reporting. He killed more people than the one in Australia. But, right, he’s white.

Or, to make a more direct comparison, it amazes me that Anders Behring Breivik isn’t a household name despite killing 77 and being a religious fundamentalist determined to protect Europe from Islam.

Hm… 8-|
