Former hotel manager here. For privately owned there is usually no specific age, but renting a room is always up to the manager’s discretion. A parent calling ahead is not a bad thing. If one of the guests is 18 it shouldn’t be a problem but in the case of the 18 and 17 year old boyfriend and girlfriend it wouldn’t hurt to have the boyfriend check in while the girlfriend waits in the car.
The nicer the hotel, the more picky they are likely to be. Also, in the past when I was feeling unsure about a young guest I would authorize their credit card for a big hit to ensure that we were covered should any damage ensue. Did it once on a fairly slow night, single guy came to the desk. I rang up a big auth. on his card. He had a pretty good size party in the suite, used every penny for the extra housekeeping time to clean up the mess.
Teri, I’m sure your girls will be fine.
And definitely, in resort type towns and during spring break you will see other rules come into play.

Yep. That’s the reason.

In P.C. they may still call it “The Curmudgeon Rule”. ;)

Thanks, im not so sure about the car, but im not that worried, im just going to go with the flow. Im sure motels will be happy with the business, (two rooms at vacation peak prices) and either way, worst thing happens, we pull out a fake ID.

Always good to plan ahead. Were you a Boy Scout? Be prepared. ;)

terwitt, I would make some reservations for them just in case, and have them call the motels while enroute to cancel if they don’t need the rooms. My husband did that for our S[18] for a trip he took up to Washington/ Oregon this last summer. All he had to do was show ID and pay with a CC he had.

Thanks for everyone’s information; since Allentown to Chicago isn’t exactly ‘resort’ type geography in mid-December, I’m not worried now that they’ll be able to get a room if needed. I’ll just do what I do every other time they travel home (by plane); stay close to home, close to the phone and have my computer ready to do a little research should it need to be done. If they do choose to pull off, I will be sure to call a place ahead of time to make the reservation.

wow… that about fits what we need! D1 is 21 and D2 is 18. I will definitely keep that in mind as stays at Choice Hotels earn us credits for Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards accounts.

I made reservations for my D and two friends at a good downtown hotel near the anime convention they were planning to attend for a couple of days this past summer. Two were 18 and one just a bit younger. When I brought them to check in we were told that at least one had to be 21. I had never even thought to ask about an age greater than 18, and think the policy was being enforced because of the nature of the convention.
