Houses- what is in & what is out?

Kajon, I have just been looking through the Lighting Universe website to do that very thing. We want to put a small chandelier or pendant over the tub instead of the recessed canister light. It’s possible that the light might have to be moved over so the box can attach to a joist - in which case the wallboard will have to be patched. Talk to an electrician in your area since local building codes vary a lot.

I too like the Tiella rails. As far as a fixture having “staying” power I can tell you about a fixture my mom had. They built their house in the late "60’s. My mom chose a simple “chandelier” for the entry. It had I think 5 arms and was black. It had very little embellishment on it, I think an applied leaf on each arm. She didn’t use shades on it, but it could have easily had lamp type shades or glass shades. Fast forward 30 plus years when they sold the house, everybody liked the fixture, even asked them where they got it, assuming is was an update. The people living there now, who are of course younger and have done lots of updating still have that fixture.

Okay. Well.

We went to the lighting store. We got there, and they are going out of business. Prices good; selection less good. But it did help us narrow our preferences. We didn’t find the perfect thing for our dining room, but we bought something for the breakfast area. Not a traditional chandelier, and I hope I haven’t made any huge design blunders that will get me shunned by society. We bought one of those fixtures that is really meant to be over an island or a pool table. A small, two-light one, similar to this (in black):
[Designers Fountain 91408-AO San Mateo 2 Light Multi Light Pendant, Ancient Oak, Traditional Island Lighting by Designers Fountain](http://www.lightinguniverse.com/island-lighting/designers-fountain-91408-ao-san-mateo-2-light-multi-light-pendant-ancient-oak_g177366.html)

I think it will look nice. And if it doesn’t, well, we are out… $50.

Wow, binx. What a great buy.

I gotta know this…a friend I have on facebook recently bought a new (huge, enormous, gigantic) home and gutted the entire interior (which looked FINE to me!) to redo. She posts pictures of the progress on FB, causing me to feel quite poor, inadequate, and unsophisticated. :)

Anyhow, the latest batch of pictures shows that she has a 3-season room overlooking the brand-new pool…the pictures are of these “floating beds”. Two twin-size beds, suspended from the ceiling, loosely anchored to the floor so they can sway in the breeze. I’ve never seen anything like it! Think hammock, only it’s a BED! (well, actually two beds).

I guess I don’t watch enough HGTV. Are these the new “in” things?

binx, excellent choice!

Appreciate the positive feedback. I’m very insecure about my design choices. Figured if it doesn’t work out, I could hang it in the basement.

JustaMom - Those beds sound like they would make me seasick.

I was in a friend’s house a few months back. Her house had had a bad fire, and had to be extensively redone. Another friend who is a decorator with some very “innovative” ideas did the whole house. One interesting (?) touch - they took the old, scorched breakfast table - removed the top, painted the legs and brace black, and hung it from the ceiling with a chandelier in the middle. They were so proud of it, and I doubt I convincingly reacted the way they wanted me to.

binx, I have almost the exact fixture you just bought (except mine has three lights) as my overhead kitchen light. I really have enjoyed it. It puts out great light.

I recently ordered three pendant lights from Lighting Universe to hang over the kitchen island in my new house. DH was really skeptical about ordering light fixtures but couldn’t find what we wanted at Lowes or Home Depot and the “lighting stores” here had outrageous pricing. So we spent a Saturday afternoon shopping online and found the perfect lights…handblown gold glass conical shaped pendants on 10 ft. cords.

Lighting Universe has tons of choices. They arrived quickly with no broken parts. When I called their Cust. Service with a question, they were friendly and helpful.

I wouldn’t hesitate to order from Lighting Universe in the future.
