And rightbackatyou is certainly correct, that the upkeep of the campus is spotless. I am certainly not casting aspersions at Tufts maintenance. Somerville and Medford are very clean also. It’s just that things can get stirred up when there is construction, it happens everywhere.

Gotcha, lola. and sam, Dewick has lazy lasagna all the time, and I bet it’s BETTER! :-P

I do hate going to Dewick alone, but it’s usually lunchtime and lots of people are there before class poring over the Daily. Not too big a deal.

I found out more about housing: I can’t believe everyone 1925 and below was waitlisted. Ummmm…!!! So some 400 kids currently have no place to live? What, can ResLife not count? I must be missing something; I can TRY to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it seems like they messed this up way too badly. People are saying that they’ll have to redo the housing lottery. I mean, if you make Stratton all-singles, that’s depleting the amount of people that can live on campus. Juniors should pick from the sophomores’ leftovers, since they’re not guaranteed housing. I’m saying this AS a rising junior, by the way.

Keep in mind that whatever number you heard doesn’t exactly mean that everyone under that number got waitlisted because people average numbers together (and they had to since there were no singles). I didn’t hear this rumor, though; I just know that there were no singles offered to sophomores.

On another website where students post comments on their schools, a couple reviewers mentioned bugs in the dorms. Does anyone know what kinds of bugs they meant? Like rats, roaches are probably tough to avoid in any urban area. They weren’t talking about bedbugs, were they…? Have been reading about them spreading north to hotels and apartments in NY and even Boston :(

I heard about a cockroach problem in Carmichael, but I don’t know if that was just rumors or whatnot.
I’ve never had a bug problem in my dorm. I definitely have seen substantially less bugs here at Tufts than I ever did back home.

Me, too! But I lived in the tropics, so that’s another story… tarantulas in the laundry room et al.

Are there really roaches in Charmichael? You serious?

That’s the rumor I heard, and it made sense to me at the time since it is the dining hall.
Unless you’re being sarcastic; it’s hard to read sarcasm in an online forum.

My daughter had a ground floor room in South freshman year and she had some small grease ants in her room. She had to be very careful about leaving food around.

well yeah, people averaged together…but 1925 and below is waitlisted. Not a rumor. Fact.

Are freshman guaranteed housing?
are sophomores?

Freshmen and sophomores are not only guaranteed on-campus housing – they are REQUIRED to live on campus.

Seniors who want to live on campus almost 100% can – but most choose to live off-campus. About 40+% of the junior class goes abroad and those who remain at Tufts usually just live off-campus; note, however, that several juniors do also get on-campus housing, but it’s hardest for their class than any other one.

By off-campus, note that this means literally right next-door. I have friends who live off-campus who get to class faster than friends who live in dorms.

(Sam937) Nah, I wasn’t being sarcastic at all. I lived in Carhmichael and never heard such a thing for that half a semester I was there. Nor did experience ants when I lived in South, on the ground floor no less. I don’t question the truth of these accounts, I’m just shocked is all.

Every senior and junior who went to the lottery got on-campus housing. What happens is, juniors assume that they’re not going to get housing, so most of them just go off campus and don’t bother even trying for a place on campus. So then the juniors who do go for it get housing.

yeah there are cockroaches in carmichael and rodents in wren. Haskell and Lewis are known for pests also. I’ve never heard of bedbugs being a problem though.

are freshmen able to get singles

yes, but I’m not sure if you can request them. There are a fair amount of singles in one of the freshman dorms (Hill). But most freshman are going to be put into doubles.

you can request a single as a freshman, but unless you are physically disabled or can show a compelling reason for needing one, it’s unlikely that you’ll get one. It’s also possible (though not likely) that you may be assigned one based on what the housing situation is.

Having a roommate freshman year is really actually better than you would think. As a pre-frosh I thought having a roommate would be awful as I’d never shared a living space (room) for more than few days before in my whole life… but it’s a learning experience, and more often than not, your roommate becomes your close friend!
