You won’t receive anything in the mail–it’s all online. Check out http://gwired.gwu.edu/freshmen and following the housing app instructions. If you can access the housing app, your deposit was received and you can go ahead and apply for housing.

I have applied to live in Lafayette, but I notice that on the website it does not say that Lafayette offers housekeeping services or a microwave/fridge combination, and I was told that all freshman dorms have both of these. Can someone please tell me what to expect in Lafayette next year?

I’m almost positive that all frosh dorms have the housekeeping and microwave/fridge combo. At least that’s what I was told when I was there.

yeah, i really hope so. i don’t think lafayette has a kitchen though, which is a HUGE pitfall - i really wanna do honors housing, but its gonna suck so much if i can’t cook at all, cuz i really don’t want to gain the freshman 15 from eating out so much.

When i visited lafayette and took a tour of it, there was a communal kitchen downstairs, so they definetly have one.

thanks a lot :)

i feel like i won’t gain the freshman 15 because of all the walking to be done in DC!

now that I’ve finally filled out my app (took forever to get my PIN), I’ve put HoVA first, then Lafayette, then Mitchell. I really don’t want to live in a single, however, nor do I want to live in a quad/five/six. Triples is pushing it, even.

anyone else sign up for an LLC? I put Justice in America first, then Quill Pen, and I don’t really have a third choice but I put Elections, because it’s in Hova.

ohhh, can we only sign up for Lafayette if we’re honors? no, right?

Right–anyone can sign up for Lafayette. I was told, however, during the tour that most Lafayette residents were either honors program, biochem, or part of the big LLC in that building (can’t remember the name right off hand).

when do they get back to us about housing?

When do we get gw e-mail addresses?

Housing assignments are released July 18th, I think (give or take a few days). Kind of late, I know, but I guess it’s done that way to give us an opportunity to find potential roommates at CI.

Search the GW Message Board–http://gwired.gwu.edu/freshmen. There was a post on there some time back that gave a link to the site where you can go ahead and register your e-mail address.

All Freshmen dorms have houskeeping every week. Beware, although they say you will receive housekeeping every week…the housekeepers don’t really come every week. Additionally, they don’t really do a good job of cleaning the rooms. I remember it took us 3-4 weeks before housekeeping was even willing to come and vacuum our rooms. It’s best to try and keep your room as cleanly as possible rather than relying on housekeeping.

As for the dorms on Foggy Bottom, it depends on what one wants. Location wise, I think thurston and HOVA are quite far. Initially, almost all freshmen are alright with the treck but it sucks when you have an 8:00 am class and have to walk a mile just to go to class (especially in the snow!!) Additionally, although you will party alot in thurston…it’s definitely a target dorm to get busted by University Police. There have been many timnes when i’ve been in there hanging out with friends when UPD will try and bust kids. You’ll meet alot of people in Thurston, but it’s def a whole diff feel than the Mt. Vernon campus dorms and the rest of the dorms on foggy bottom. As for HOVA, I personally think it’s a little overrated but that is just my opinion. Although it has a more homely feel, I don’t think the rooms are nice enough to make the treck that one would have to make everyday. The other two dorms…lafayette and Fulbright aren’t so bad. I personally liked Lafayette over fulbright, but both dorms have a spectacular location. As for the mount vernon campus, I lived their last year and hated it. The shuttle service is what I hated most about the campus. The rooms are actually EXTREMELY nice and you become very very close with the individulas in your dorm, but it all depends on what your priorities are.

Hope this helps!!

Where do people party at GW? Do people get busted for alcohol in Thurston? That’s so lame.

alot of people party in various places. Many times, kids will pre-game in the room and then go out to clubs, bars, or just explore D.C. since there are so many things to do. Well, it’s possible to get busted in any of the freshmen dorms because they are all dry dorms. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that Thurston is more of a target since everyone know shtat it’s the party dorm. Also, if you have a strict RA…they can easily bust you. My experiences with Thurston haven’t been so great…my friends who lived in there got busted MANY times but I’m not sure if its like that for everyone.

But if you get busted…you get suspended or arrested, right?

I will be living in Thurston next year and I want to party. I don’t necessarily need an Animal House college experience, but on the weekends I would like to have a good time. I have partied a fair amount in high school and enjoy it.

I’ve been considering joining a fraternity but I always thought that kind of stuff was lame, but I don’t know anyone at GW and I am preppy. I wonder if that would be a good option?

is there air conditioning in all the dorms?

Hoo,
If you’re smart…you won’t get busted in Thurston. That is, make sure you dont have 50 people in your room when you are drinking cuz then it will be obvious that you are partying. Also, Thurston has cameras in the hallways so it’s easier to get busted.

Chickenlegs,
yes there is airconditioning in all the dorms. Most dorms on FB have a system where you can adjust your own temp…the dorms on MV are centralized which kind of sucks cuz sometimes it gets really cold and other times it gets too hot. I lived there and we complained to Fixit and they normally fixed it, but that didn’t always happen.

Hey ppl
this is my 1st post
I registered for the housing late, and I really really want HOVA
Do you think chances of getting HOVA r slight, considering I’m applying for the engineering community in there, and my roommate finished her housing appl on the 1st of may, and she has HOVA as 1st choice

:) take care ppl

My daughter is considering to apply for a special program housed on Mt. Vernon. I read several e-mails clearly stating that staying at that site, especially for freshmen, is not good. I am now concerned that if she were accepted and had to stay off the main campus, would she be sorry that she is missing an essential freshman experience?
