<p>Yes, technically you need to live in a dorm your Freshman and Sophomore year. However, you can claim “commuter” status if you live in an apartment I believe. You might want to call the commuter affairs office to see what the requirements for being a commuter are. But I definitely know some people do that.</p>

<p>My advice though: Live in the dorms. You will meet more people this way and your freshman experience will be much better. Commuters have a tough time meeting other people, and a lot of Professors assign group work and such and it’s just so much easier to live in the dorms. It’s also a great experience.</p>
