How affordable would these colleges be for me?

@Slavic2000 If you can get a 1520 on your SAT and you qualify for the full Pell grant, you should look at UAH and apply before Dec15 so you can get both automatic merit and competitive scholarships.

https://www.uah.edu/admissions/undergraduate/financial-aid/scholarships/merit-tuition-scholarships

Make sure to take a look at Rice, which participates in Questbridge and meets 100% of need (without loans for family incomes under $80K).

Take a look at the thread at the top of this forum that has the list of automatic full-tuition and full-ride scholarships. If you can get your SAT or ACT score up to the number required, you will get the scholarship. Many of those places have decent engineering programs, so you may have multiple options to choose from.

My son is in a similar situation(though we are American and Alabama residents) and are also waiting to hear about Questbridge. Income last year was 7,800 but no real savings, 3.94 GPA, 24 ACT(waiting on scores from the last test). Alabama and UAH have automatic merit if we can get the scores up enough, and though it wouldn’t be our first choice Prairie View A&M in Texas has engineering and merit scholarships with a lower threshold for scores. I really don’t think petroleum engineering is a bad choice because there will continue to be a demand for it, at least for several years. My Dad’s cousin is a retired petroleum engineer and still does some consulting, his younger daughter has gone into the field as well and went to work right away. He was talking to my son not long ago and he thinks it is still a good field to go into, but you have to go where the work is, usually Texas or Louisiana.

@HeartofDixie Have your son also try the SAT. Some kids do better on that. I also think petroleum engineering is fine.

University of New Mexico and Utah State have ABET accredited engineering programs. They provide scholarships to to high stats students to bring tuition down to their already low (compared to other states) instate cost. University of Alabama Huntsville is also a good option. I would add at least one of these schools to your list of meets full need schools.

Alright, what are your opinions on the financial aid of these colleges?
Louisiana State University
Montana Tech
University of Texas at Permian Basin
Is their financial aid any better than the colleges I originally listed?

They have a net price calculator tools on every college website. Run them.
Without state residency, most public institutions will not be affordable unless your stats qualify you for an automatic full ride. Public university financial aid goes predominantly to state residents.

Our opinions do not matter compared to what each college’s net price calculator tells you.

@ucbalumnus
I believe that getting a second opinion from actual humans is valuable.

If you question the colleges’ net price calculator results, the humans whose opinions actually matter are those in the colleges’ financial aid offices, not on this forum. Ask them.

@menloparkmom
QuestBridge decisions came out recently, and I got in.

Congratulations Slavic!

Hopefully this will help get you what you need!

@HRSMom
Thank you.
