Heard from a friend (can anyone verify?). Her son and husband could not book a hotel in Albuquerque because they were from California. Anyone with a California driver’s license is being denied reservations at Albuquerque hotels. True?
I tried Google and didn’t find anything definitive.

I’m having this same issue but more so the 10 hour drive. I will have to go to the restroom, at some point. I’m planning on taking Clorox wipes and my own soap/paper towels.
We had a 13.5 hour drive each way. The highway rest stops were very clean. Masks and very thorough hand washing made us feel relatively comfortable. As comfortable as one can feel in a public place these days …
My son and his wife recently celebrated their first anniversary by booking the same suite they had for the wedding weekend. It’s a pet-friendly hotel so they were able to bring their dog along. The hotel previously had multiple interaction areas in the lobby - pool table, groups of furniture, etc - and those had all disappeared. While their impression was that the hotel was very clean, they brought along supplies and thoroughly cleaned the suite when they arrived. They ordered in meals and didn’t interact with any of the other guests.
One thing we are doing for the house I vacation rent (AirBnB/VRBO/Direct) is my cleaner places a whole complement of dishes-plates. bowls. glasses, cups, silverware- into the dishwasher & runs it on sanitize and leaves that for incoming guests so they know that what they use their first night is guaranteed sanitary and not been touched. If you stay in a rental home, you could request that.
It would depend. If I am in a state where mask wearing is required in public spaces, I would say something.
If I had been assured that the staff would be wearing masks when I made the reservation, I would say something.
I’m a big weenie though and didn’t say anything to a client of mine - his Mom, the contractor, the building inspector and I all had their masks on. He had an N95 mask - the kind with a valve - and was wearing it under his chin. I tried to stay far away from him. We were in his Mom’s house, so it felt hard to say something.
I live in Michigan, where several people who asked shoppers to put on masks were stabbed/shot. I would not say a word. You can’t fix stupid, but it can kill you.
The excellent news: The combination of our Governor’s mask mandate & Kroger’s mask mandate is working. I went to my local Kroger, in the land of anti-maskers, today. 100% with masks, all of whom wore them correctly & the entire time in the store. I will also add that maybe, just maybe, the president calling mask wearing patriotic helped. We need everyone on board for this to get under control.
Chicago has a 14 day quarantine mandate for people entering from several states as well. Sadly we had to eliminate Chicago from our road trip, but now we get to visit Iowa instead. Details for these kinds of quarantines should be available at the state or city websites, and they change constantly so it’s wise to double check restrictions at any of your destinations. Chicago updates their list of states weekly. I’ve also called hotels where we plan to stay to ask about local restrictions since the hotel employees know what’s happening there and it saves me a lot of uncertainty.
I got an email asking me to provide a review of the hotel. I said the room was clean, comfortable, and spacious, but it was not acceptable that the woman at the front desk was wearing her mask under her nose and that they need to train their staff better.
There is a big issue now with these state quarantine requirements. They are changing from day to day (for example NJ removed Delaware from their list and a few days later put it back on). This makes it impossible to plan anywhere into the future (as @Culbreath just experienced they had to remove Chicago from their trip).
Enforcement varies by state. When I asked a hotel in Boston- they said there was no enforcement, when I asked a hotel in Maine- they said you had to sign something at check-in.
I feel like the only way to do any trip this year across state lines is last minute. Calling right before to see what rules are in place at that particular time.
I read somewhere that in Canada they do send people to check that you are quarantining as required (haven’t heard of that anywhere in the US.)
I also completed a hotel survey & said that I think a corporate mandate for masks in public areas is necessary. Most people are law abiding, and I definitely noticed increased compliance once both the Governor and the stores began requiring masks (rather than just suggesting it). Some may have disagreed, but they did it.
We have called seven hotels in the past week. None leave any room vacate for any length of time between customers and when we asked their COVID policies we got a confused utterance of some sort or another each time. I’m fairly sure that we will just sleep in our car on our road trip- I wouldn’t take one at all if I had any choice whatsoever.
I work with a lot of registry health care workers. A lot of them travel to assignments. There are programs through the state or the hotels for healthcare workers for free or reduced prices.
