<p>High 60s and sunny with blue skies in the Bay Area. Sunday and yesterday were beautiful days at Sunken Diamond. Honestly, this makes paying what we pay for our homes around here, VERY worthwhile.</p>
<p>That being said–I am wondering if our redeye for Boston will take off from the Bay Area tomorrow night???</p>

<p>We are socked in here (Vermont) with this blizzard. I’m not sure how much has fallen since it started in the middle of last night but there is three feet of snow on my deck! I was to fly out today to where it is 80 degrees on the West Coast…obviously didn’t happen. Flights also canceled tomorrow. I have to wait until Friday. This has been quite the dump and it is still going strong. Add in wind chills of 20 below tomorrow…it is a winter wonderland. Now, let’s see if I can ever get out…</p>
<p>Patient, you’re bragging a little. I don’t live that far from you and I turned the heat on today. On the other hand, we were able to walk on the beach this weekend along the San Mateo coast where we came around a cliff and found ourselves in the middle of a colony of harbor seals. How could anybody not want to live in California?</p>
<p>S has said it is cold in NYC and he is sick, as usual at this time of year. But he no longer complains about the weather there. As far as I know, midterms are not cancelled. I do think he will beat a retreat for California after graduating, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking.</p>
<p>Garland – since S went East, I’ve heard him use both “Cali” and “NorCal”, though I never heard him use those terms out here.</p>
<p>I talked to my daughter in New York today, and was rewarded with this gem of wisdom:</p>
<p>“There is no such thing as bad weather – only inappropriate weather.”</p>
<p>She then went on to explain that she had not felt cold any time this year, but that she always bundles up. She said she noticed that the girls who were always complaining about being cold weren’t wearing much in the way of clothing. (I pictured girls in short skirts, halter tops, and flip flops trudging past snow drifts).</p>
<p>FWIW, I know that my daughter does not own any really heavy-duty cold-weather wear - no down-filled parkas or fur-lined snow boots. When she says “bundled” she means layered – and we San Franciscans definitely are experts in the art of layering.</p>
<p>(And lest anyone respond to my daughter’s comment above with tales of how much colder it is wherever they or their kids are: my d. has first-hand experience with Russian winters. Of course, she is on a campus where she doesn’t have all that far to walk to get to class. In Russia she used to have to sometimes wait an hour for a bus, and the buses had no heat – so they were cold while they waited and only slightly less cold while they rode).</p>
<p>Just because a college doesn’t cancel class doesn’t mean the class is held.

<p>My daughter said that school was in session on her campus, but her first class of the day was canceled when the prof didn’t show up, as he was unable to make the commute. Apparently the campus does not send out dog sleds to fetch the profs who aren’t able to brave the weather on their own.</p>

Sac–shoot, you sent me to the weather history site and you’re right, it was “only” 60 the last couple of days. Will rise again to the mid to high 60s the next few days, then rain again. Tell S to take Airborne. I’m packing tubes of it!!
I asked my kids, and they said yes “Cali” is now pretty accepted in their age group in “California”, it’s not as bad as that awful word sometimes used by furreners for San Francisco…</p>
<p>Sorry, Garland, not intentional…the “ite” suffix looked chemical to me and I just flowed in that direction.</p>
<p>As to California reputations, perhaps the reputation is wrong. However, I’ve heard said that the difference between LA and NYC is that in NYC when they invite you over for dinner it sounds as if they’re saying eff-you, whereas in California when they’re saying eff-you it sounds as if they’re inviting you over for dinner.</p>

<p>Marite, re: “a lot of sludge” DS said he went through FOUR pairs of socks yesterday. (Then he had the bright idea to dig out his boots.)</p>
<p>DH was at MIT during the blizzard of '78. He was X-country skiing down Mass Ave when some “thugs” (probably Harvard students ;)) stood on his skis, knocked him down and stole his raccoon hat!</p>
<p>Sunny and warm here (truly mid-60s right now, tomorrow predicted to be 69 and then 71 on Saturday). Blue skies, and the early fruit trees are beginning to blossom. I love California. Can’t WAIT to see Ds’ expressions tomorrow! My “college visit” report will probably be all about which campus was the coldest!</p>

<p>Well–wait and see. As of right now, our flight is delayed departure two hours (to 10:30 at night, way past my bedtime!). I have confirmed with the hotels that we will not be charged if the airline cancels the flight. If it does cancel, we will jump in the car and head for LA and southern California (or should I say, socal?) schools instead. We wouldn’t mind!!</p>
<p>Argh… Patient.
It’s been gloriously sunny today, and slushy, too. Waterproof boots are a must.

<p>sorry eastern friends, but I have to update: A local weather reporter said that it would be “86 degrees tomorrow in San Bernardino with the wind chill”. :D</p>
