@chaoakita–have you considered showing up late for the debate weekend? Would your parents bring you??? You can take the test early in the morning… and then have them drop you off. A nice compromise…

@smythic–what do you have the link for that PBS/WSJ report on debate. I would like to read it!

Tough choice. Your debate tornament will have to be sacrificed. You still have several weekends, including the long Thanksgiving one, to study for that SAT subject test. Cosider it a final exam. It could make a difference in your application, moreso than a higher ACT/SAT. Stop complaining about the situation now and use your time to study instead of continuing here. Good luck on the test.

PS- my son should have studied for his subject tests- the math review in AP calculus wasn’t enough to get an 800… but that is ancient history.

As the parent of a Policy debater, I feel your pain. My D is now a college freshman and I remember the angst last year as she tried to balance debating, college apps and school work. People outside the debate community have little idea of the time commitment debating takes.

Are you planning on debating in college? Are you trying to qualify for the TOC? My feeling was my D’s debate success/commitment is part of the equation that led her to 3 offers of free rides.

This is a dilemma that only you and your parents can work out. DD had to miss a top tournament last year for a scholarship interview weekend- both her coach and her debate partner understood.
