My folks’ dog stunk terribly; it turned out to be an ear infection. No idea how that pervaded her whole body. (Good thing kids don’t smell when they get ear infections, no?)

Lots of products out there at your local independent pet store! Go in and ask for help.

I personally like Earthbath products – all natural shampoos, conditioners, wipes and spritzes. Natures Miracle and their alter ego Petastic have wipes and sprays for doggie smell. Those are just a few – BioGroom is good, Tropiclean is good. Those are all more mainstream than some of the doggie-spa products that will probably work well also.

There are also some scent impregnated collars – smell like lavender. They look like flea collars, but smell good instead of chemical smell.

Waterless bath is also an option. Several manufacturers of that also.

Regular brushing will help somewhat with that typical oily Lab odor. We avoid bathing our Chocolate because she has twice gotten skin infections after baths at the vet–not sure what the connection is, but once you’ve smelled “wet eczema” and seen how sick a dog can get from the condition in mere hours, you’d do anything to avoid a recurrence.

Which reminds me of the time my teenage son decided he was going to attempt to bathe our dog at home, in the bathtub. As a typical Lab, she will do anything for food, so rather than lift a 90 pound animal into the tub, he decided to make the tub irresistible by sitting in it himself and scattering kibble, assuming she would just jump in. It’s a sight I will never forget–DS, wearing just a bathing suit, sitting in a dry tub surrounded by kibble, while a Lab stares at him with great suspicion and then ambles out of the room.

Make sure his ears are clean. They even sell a product especially for cleaning and deodorizing ears.

I love Tropiclean (the kind with Neem Oil) for my Golden. The only time I notice any smell from my dog is either after he has been in the pool or creek, or if he has an ear infection. Perhaps a vet check is in order if bathing doesn’t help.

Do you let your dog onto every piece of upholstered furniture which appeals?

I would definitely not do that. Our lab was perfectly happy on her pillow - in our family room - where we always were. Then we could wash that often - which you definitely should do.
