How can I (realistically) deal with First World Guilt?

Busdriver you are my hero. I so wanted to say (but not as well) the same things. But here goes: you have a checkbook…use it…and beyond this: We are damn lucky that our families choose to come here to make a better life. Beyond that…get over yourself.

OP, I think it’s great that you’re starting to realize things going on in the wider world. And that’s not uncommon when one reaches high school and college. And it’s also not uncommon to want to DO SOMETHING and feel a little guilty that you’re warm, dry, safe and sound while others are not. Good for you. I disagree that you should get over yourself. But I also think you shouldn’t feel bad you’re who you are. Just "use your powers for good–help out with some causes you feel strongly about.

That’s what my D does-of course as a young student she can’t just open her checkbook, but she volunteers with low-income kids year-round, at her church, donates to causes she feels strongly about, and has plans to go into a career that will continue helping kids with challenges. And she just got back from Africa where she helped build a school. It opens next month.

No one person can help everyone everywhere. But find your causes and do what works for you.

Vote.

I would turn off TV for one, that’s what I’ve often told my husband.
