How come flight tickets cost so much =/

Thanks for the info on the suitcase factor.
I am very hopeful now.

All things considered, airfares are cheaper than they have ever been on a relative and real basis. Your prospective is that you are on limited funds which makes the tickets look expensive. It used to be that the alternative modes of transportation, car, bus, train, were cheaper than flying, that case no longer holds-flying is cheaper and faster.

Yeah I’m really inexperienced when it comes to any sort of traveling, but this thread has been really helpful.

I just checked the Jet Blue website. You could get a flight out of Long Beach at 7:52 pm on April 6 for $89 and a flight back at 6:40 pm on April 8. That would give you all of Wed., April 7 and most of the day on April 8. With 34.52 in taxes, the total would be $209.40. Jet Blue allows your first checked bag free and you can choose your seat. JB is our favorite airline.

Ok, just saw about being there on April 11. You could fly out on Thursday, April 8 for $89 and back later on Sunday, April 11 for $107. With taxes, it would total $217.40.

If you are interested, book soon!

sounds good
will wens be too late?

No one knows what the fare will be on Wednesday. They tend to go up significantly in the three weeks before a flight, but not always. If you are happy with the one you found, grab it.

That’s hard to say. Actually, I just checked the website again and the Sunday flight jumped to $172. But if you could delay coming back until Monday, they show their 6:40 pm flight back at $107.

You would need a credit card to book your flights online. Would your parents let you use theirs and then you could repay them?

sofaraway…use carryon baggage only. One bag…no charge.

I think I might go on JetBlue from Tues 4/6 to Tues 4/13, which is $199 total. I will miss Mon and Tues of school, but it should be a nice vacation. Hopefully the prices don’t go up, because I am not ready to pay just yet. I talked to my mom earlier about this and she would be willing to pay, but I rather pay for it because it seems like a lot.

That sounds like it would be a nice week! And as I said, on Jet Blue you can check one bag free. Also, their snacks are free. If you are going to do a carry-on bag, be sure you are familiar with the rules of the TSA with what you can bring in a carry on. Also you need to have acceptable identification. I believe that a photo driver’s license from any state is acceptable, but check first. Visit [TSA | Transportation Security Administration | U.S. Department of Homeland Security](http://www.tsa.gov) for those details

Ok, Thanks for all the info from everyone.
Hopefully everything works out  It would be a great Birthday Present lol.
Oh and is a carry on a suitcase or what?

You are permitted to bring one personal item (briefcase, computer bag, etc) and one carry on bag. Check this link to see what size a carry on can be [JetBlue | The basics on bringing carry-ons and checking bags](http://www.jetblue.com/deals/first-bag-free/?intcmp=HPFirstBagFree20090911)

Carry-on rules for JetBlue …

Carry-on Requirements
Each customer may bring one bag that fits in the overhead bin plus one personal item (purse, briefcase, laptop, etc.) that fits under the seat in front of you.

Your personal item must not exceed 17"l (43.2 cm) x 12.5"w (31.8 cm) x 8"h 20.3 cm) in order to fit under the seat in front of you.

To fit in the overhead bin, your item must not exceed:

for our Airbus A320: 26 inches (66 centimeters) length x 18 inches (45.72 centimeters) width x 12 inches (30.48 centimeters) height
for our EMBRAER 190: 24 inches (60.96 centimeters) length x 16 inches (40.64 centimeters) width x 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) height

I also urge you to book your ticket ASAP - fares change from day to day and as someone else pointed out once you get down to 21 days before departure flight prices often rise. And it usually gets worse from there.

Many airlines will offer ‘airline’ credit if the price drops after booking - Southwest offers a credit if the fare drops and there is still a seat available at that price. I believe that JetBlue is also accomodating.

I may be mistaken, but I think I have heard that most airline promotions begin on Tuesdays or Wednesdays (which also means that promotions may end on those days).

The soonest I can pay is Monday =/ if that.

The airfare market between SEA and LAX/LGB is an odd one because there is lots of competition. Sometimes flights are really cheap a couple days before the flight, but I would book as soon as you can, preferably during the week as I seem to find better prices and flight times then. I recommend booking on the individual airline’s website after searching on a site that lists all the airlines.

As an FYI, Delta hasn’t flown nonstop between SEA and LAX for awhile now. Their nonstop flight is actually a codeshare that has you flying Alaska Airlines. I personally really like flying Alaska and am trying to earn elite status on them this year. They have the most nonstop flights between Southern California and Seattle, have good service, and offers a credit if fares go down. I’ve heard that Virgin America is nice, liked flying on Jet Blue and United, and have been wanting to fly Southwest for awhile now. Note that Southwest does not offer a nonstop flight LAX/LGB-SEA for some reason, which means that you’ll be spending extra time to fly what is a pretty short distance. For a short trip such as this, you shouldn’t need to check a bag. I usually travel with a small carry-on suitcase and my laptop backpack.

Yeah If I end up going to this school I will fly twice a year, hopefully I get good at finding cheap plane tickets lol.
