<p>I was suspended too, but only because I defended myself when I was jumped. Michigan overlooked it with my explanation and accepted me. It really depends on what your “disciplinary issues” are.</p>

<p>@MechiganBoy Wow, you need to chill out. First off, the comment clearly wasn’t intended as an insult and definitely didn’t warrant a personal attack. Second, in all honesty, it’s true. It’s certainly not a bad score, don’t get me wrong, but it isn’t above avg. for UM, nor is it a “great accomplishment”.</p>

<p>The posters, MImama, are referring to the comment right after the OP’s from another student upset by his/her deferral, who referred to his/her ACT score of 29 as being “above average.” That statement is true in the general population, and NOT TRUE in the context of University of Michigan applicant pool (it is, in fact, very average and BELOW the mean of 31 I believe.)</p>

<p>The national ACT average score is a 21/22ish. Therefore, a 29 is well above average. That score may be around the average for the University of Michigan (sometimes even above), but getting that score is nonetheless a great accomplishment, especially in comparison with the rest of the country. Everyone on here should be proud of themselves because there are so many high achievers, but it’s just unnecessary to shoot someone down like that who was right in the first place and telling them it was just average. I just feel bad for the students that come on here and think they aren’t good enough because of what everyone else says.</p>
<p>^^Agreed that 29 is for the general population a well-above-average score. However, the name of the thread was “How did I get deferred” and implicit in that is that a student should not be deferred with a 29 ACT, when in actuality for this particular school that kind of ACT score is a little below average and certainly doesn’t guarantee acceptance when the majority of matriculating students have similar scores or scores well above it.</p>
