How did you break up the med school requirements throughout your undergraduate years?

Orgo I and II were both with Labs also

D will be starting sop year, her schedule is looking like this:

Freshman: Fall: Great Books; Spring: Orgo I + lab, Differential Equations
Sophomore: Fall: Orgo II + lab, Physiology, lab; Spring: Cell bio or Genetics, Biochem, labs
Take MCAT in the Summer
Junior: Fall: Chem (?) + lab, Physics (?); Spring: Physics (?)

Plus one more writing class along the way somewhere.

Freshmen year
Fall: Gen Chem I + lab and recitation, Calculus I, Freshmen Writing Seminar
Spring: Gen Chem II+lab and recitation

Sophomore year
Fall:Intro to Biological Sciences I + lab, Calculus II, Intro to Poetry
Spring: Intro to Biological Sciences II
Summer: Intro to Physics I&II + labs

Junior year
Fall: Organic Chemistry I + lab
Spring: Organic Chemistry II + lab in addition to an MCAT prep class in the evening

entomom- Just a quick question. I don’t really understand the schedule for your bio courses, so can you please explain a bit to me? Like, for the required one year of bio, I’m seeing that you started off taking your first ever bio class as “cell bio or genetics”?

Basically, just confused to read that she took cell bio/genetics, AND biochem w/labs, because I thought that you would have to first take general bio, then move on up to stuff like cell bio/genetics, and then finally move on up to Biochem, but it looks like she did all of that in the same year lol :P.

She has credit for AP Bio, so she’s able to take higher level Bio classes (physiol, cell biol, genetics). She will have completed the Orgo series in fall of sop year (also has AP Chem credit) and can then take Biochem in the spring.

Hey, I hope I have this all correct, if anyone sees problems, I’m much rather hear about it now ;)! Also, she’s transferring this fall, so she’ll touch base with the premed adviser to confirm her class schedule.

Would it look bad if I take either the full year of Biochem or Genetics during the Summer, while doing research and/or shadowing?

My school requires me to take both. I need to orient my schedule in such a way so that I may fit them in along with ECs and still attain a high GPA. It would make my life so much easier if I could take one of them during the summer. Are they both really helpful for MCATs?

Feel free to comment on my schedule. Soem ppl have told me that I could take biochem 2 in soph yr, but I doubt that it’s wise to take it w/ orgo and stuff? What do you think?

Soph
Fall- Evolutionary Bio, Gen Bio Lab, Orgo 1, Stats (either in spring or
fall)
Spring- Gen Bio Lab, Orgo, Orgo Lab, biochem 2 or genetics or
evolutionary bio

Junior

Spring- Biochem 2 or genetics, Physics 2, Physics Lab,
Biochem Lab

Senior
Fall- bio class, Humanities Course
Spring- Genetics, Genetics Lab, Humanities Course

Calc 3, Physics 1, Gen Chem 2

Orgo 1, Writing, Physics 2, Linear Algebra
