How difficult to hail a cab at Grand Central Terminal?

That is very sweet. I hope you get to go… I’m sure you will love it. I took my mom up for her first time last week… She always gets so scared that I’m going to get lost or killed or something when I go up there… so I wanted to take her up for a day to show her around and show her that it’s not nearly as scary as she thinks. She did her first subway ride. I took her photo holding her metrocard and everything. I took her to Times Square, FAO Schwartz, the Macy’s at Herald Square, and to the Rockefeller center to see the ice skating and we went to a show. She seemed to have fun but was a bit overwhelmed by all of the people in Times Square.

IMO the Times Square subway station is one of the most overwhelming in the entire NYC subway system, as there are 3 major lines at 7th Avenue, plus the GC shuttle & the underground walkway to 8th avenue! I would not recommend it to a newbie! GCT is much easier - only 2 major lines, plus the 3 car shuttle to Times Sq come into GCT.

If you want to get to the Roosevelt from the Metro North Train, sit in the back of the train and head back - there’s an exit to 47th and Park Avenue. I’ve been to conferences at the hotel, it was very nice and the food was great!

I would disagree with Mathmom - the 47th & Park exit will require you to backtrack to 45th street and depending on what track you come in on, possibly even back to the west. Actually I would sit near the front, as using the stairs on the west side of the upper concouse of Grand Central (to the right as you exit the platform) brings you out at 43rd & Vanderbilt. Another option is to take the escalators up to 200 Park and walk through the lobby; you will on 45th and the Roosevelt is only 1 block to the west (left as you approach lobby exit). If you happen to come into GCT on one of the higher numbered tracks, there is a staircase that brings you out on 45th across from the Roosevelt.

Hmm NJMom seems to be right - maybe I’m confusing the Roosevelt with the Waldorf Astoria. I do like going out the back though when it makes sense- way less people!

no problem! I used to work in 200 Park and now work in the Chrysler Building, so I head through GCT a few times/week for lunch or to pass through to get to stores on Madison! (highly recommend the take away breakfast & lunch food in Cucina in 200 Park lobby)
