Your original plan does not sound doable. Have you considered the long term struggle in your future to pay off that mountain of debt at a low paying job?
CUNY has Paid and unpaid internships and some special programs that connect directly with the DOE, and many CUNY professors/lecturers are or have been public school teachers. Getting a job here is all about the connections and CUNY is far and away the best way to make connections. I think you are very much mistaken because St. Joseph’s simply doesn’t have a wonderful reputation, certainly not as good as the CUNY schools. It is not worth the money. I can’t urge you strongly enough to take Sybbie’s word. She knows whereof she speaks.
I would have to live at home. My loans (in my name) would only be $22,000 plus interest which isn’t that bad considering.
Add me to the list who say not to attend St Joseph’s! The loan payments will be ridiculous. If you are going into education there will be better student teaching opportunities at a public university. Try to have as little debt as possible. Always. Through your whole life. Good luck.
I’ve actually been on hiring committees for K-12 ( not in NYC) and my experience has been to my surprise, that teachers on the hiring committee have been biased * against* well qualified teachers, especially if they are perceived to have " better" references, than those of the teachers working at the school, even though the hiring committee teachers have been teaching for 10-20 years.
( most striking example, a woman who taught at Bank Street of Education, but wanted to relocate to Seattle to be closer to grown children. She had stellar references and great energy but she was not even asked back for 2nd interview because the woman whose dept she would have been in didn’t like her, and my impression was because she was " new blood", she hadn’t experienced that uncertainty of having a new superintendent and principal every couple years.)
Your parents are divorcing. Your mom’s credit may end up taking a hit. There’s no way to count on her getting plus loans in the future…she’ll have to requalify.
Going to a pricey school for Child Education is silly and NOT necessary. Go local to the least expensive school.
