My husband is a physician who knew a guy who played a D1 sport and did pre med, but it is definitely very, very challenging. Lots of studying on bus rides. Alternatives might be a physician’s assistant or playing sports at a D3 level or at a D1 level where academics are more supported (patriot league).

Best of luck to your son!!

There is NO such thing as anesthesiologist major.
Most in Medical Schools cannot make any decision about their specialty until after Step 1 Board exam, since some specialties are very selective and require a very high score and you cannot re-take the Step 1, unless you fail.
If a kid thinks about Medical School, he can be absolutely any major. If he considers another medically related career, keep in mind that most of them requre challenging science classes and very high college GPA.
Well, talking about sport. There are pre-med kids who are actually doing varsity. D. has tried club for the duration of freshman year. Then, she realized that she has many other interests that have piled up on her medically realted ECs. So, she had to drop the sport that she was involved heavily and competitively from the age of 5y o all thru HS. One will choose what is important at the certain stage, but at least try and see. She said that some other pre-meds at her UG were doing her sport at the varsity level. D’s sport is very time consuming, so it may depend on sport also. She never went back but I hope that some day she will start using it for the work outs.

I knew plenty of pre-meds that partied through college (though they did tend to study more than us liberal arts types). Also knew pre-meds who were English majors, history majors and music majors - just needed the requisite med school courses to apply. It may not be possible to aspire to med school and stay drunk and party for four years, but he should be able to have a normal social life at almost any school he chooses to go to.
