How do I learn Chinese?

I came across a free iPhone/iTouch program, iLearn Chinese - Lite, and tried it a little bit, looks pretty cool as it presents Chinese characters as pictures (for example, 口 for mouth). I managed to learn about half dozen characters in just a few minutes. I am also able to practice the character writing on my phone following demonstrations.

It also has a full version which I plan to buy after I finish the lessons in the Lite version.

Learning a new language is easiest with immersion. Therefore, you should do this:

Chinese is terrible. Just saying. ): I AM Chinese…I htink it’s the pronunciation that’s going to get you (I’m not trying to scare you, haha) But other than that it’s an amazing language to learn, it’s just that some Chinese people like to talk about you when they think you don’t know what they’re saying…-_______- I would know.

Chinese is not that hard (I probably don’t have the rights to say this since I’m a Chinese myself) but the AP Chinese test has one of the best curve ever - with 81% of test takers getting a 5, it’s not hard to get a decent score in CB Chinese tests.

You have to take classes. If you don’t do real classes with real native speakers you will not even be understood. The syntax is very difficult and so is writing and reading.

Actually native speakers use more than the four proper tones because you may want to give a different inflection. For example, mother can be pronounced with two different inflections. Also, I like the taiwanese accent more than the chinese one.

^ Yeah same here! Well I’m actually Taiwanese so I guess it’s no surprise that I like Taiwanese accent over Chinese…
