Does anyone have experience with this at hotchkiss or choate? Are legacies who are rejected called out of courtesy?
There are couple of threads on this topic. There are occasions when schools let legacies know in advance but I do not think it is a reliable or consistent event.
Thanks… I can’t find any of those threads. Can you direct me to you, possibly?
Here are a few. If you have some other topics that are of particular interest the forum search option is a great tool. You can limit your search to specific forums, search by keyword, author, date range etc.
Yes this does happen at Hotchkiss. A friend of mine at work has a wife who is an alumnus of Hotchkiss. His wife received a phone call from admissions on M9 letting her know that the son would be waitlisted as a courtesy. They also let her know the reason for the waitlist (low scores).
Do legacies ever get an explicit rejection? Don’t they just get a “soft rejection”, i.e. a WL from which they never get pulled off.
Not a legacy situation, but a sibling situation.
Prior to M10, we got a courtesy early notification from S1’s school about S2 being WL.
We had a laugh when we got the WL notice. S2 sent the wrong essay to S1’s school, expressing how he was looking forward to being at Wrong School name.
Yes, a friend of mine’s cousin was rejected from Mercersburg after her brother, father, and grandfather went there. She wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer…
And it is not just the legacies and siblings who are receiving letters of non-acceptance… until very recently, boarding schools generally accepted all the faculty kids (unless there was a compelling reason not to). Competition has become much greater, and acceptance for faculty kids is no longer a “given” at a number of schools…
I know of one school where the child of a BOARD MEMBER was WL-- how awkward…
Perhaps they were telling that board member something?
Where’s the freaking-out thread? Signed, penniless unconnected parent.
Here’s the link. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-cafe/1725805-the-m10-freak-out-thread-applicants-2015.html#latest Almost at 1000 posts. I can’t believe you never saw it. It’s in the Cafe. @twinsmama
Joking, @mathman1201. But thank you.
And good luck to you!
