let me add that right now is a great time to be in the job market. things are starting to take off.

I’d appreciate input, especially from people who do hiring, on the effect of working in a job for which someone is over qualified. My niece graduated with a double major in Psychology and English and took a retail job at Target just to earn money before deciding on a career path. She’s highly intelligent but finds she really enjoys interacting with shoppers and doing ‘manual labor’. Her dad (my brother) is getting nervous that she is getting too comfortable in this job and should be pushing herself to find something more challenging. Does a year or two of post-graduation retail work look bad on the resume of a college grad?

educ8me,
“Does a year or two of post-graduation retail work look bad on the resume of a college grad?” no gaps in work history are a red flag. a year at target is ok. (imo)

Working retail at the local level is often required for going into corporate. Is she interested in working for Target?

Working retail has been very educational for her, something a lot of kids miss out on now that high school and sports have become like a full time job for kids. Not sure if she wants to try to climb to the corporate level though.

D2 got her last two jobs through a temp agency. Her current job, as I said, started as a temp. The people she worked for encouraged her to apply for the full time position because they were pleased with her work. She still competed with others, but got the job.

It seems many companies use temp companies the way other companies use internships. It is a way to test out the prospective employee before offering them a job.

I work for a company with a large retail presence, and we love it when we get internal applicants who have experience from our retail stores. There are many fun jobs in buying, merchandising, and store operations that would really be enhanced by her experience, and you don’t necessarily need to aspire to the c-suite to get a lot out of them.

driving home from work last night I heard an add for zip recruiter aimed at employers, how easy it is to use , how
much money and time you save and about their “special” trial offer. I started thinking about this thread.

Many colleges have job databases which are available to both students and alums - same is true with their career services offices. This is another way to “network” your way to find a job.

I think using temps to evenetually hire full time is an excellent idea. You get to see firsthand what it’s like. I do that with contractors. I tried them out with small jobs first and see what they are like.
