How do people get 5/6+ hours of homework a day?

People like to exaggerate how much work they have so that should be noted. But what I noticed in my transition from middle school to high school is that work grows on you. You start out have practically no homework in middle school. In freshman year you only have a little more. And it gets progressively more intense. However, each year, our baseline is moved up. So even though junior year course load would be very difficult to handle for a middle schooler, compared to the newly formed baseline, it is not much more difficult. Heck I didn’t even notice that I was doing more until I thought about it because it grew on me so much. I was shocked in middle school when hearing about how much hw high schoolers had, but you don’t really notice the change b/c it is so gradual.

I just finished freshmen year, and honestly, its not as bad as it seems. The upward trend of hw is gradual and if you’re only taking one Ap or just honors, I wouldn’t worry. Expect around 1-2 hours normally. A lot of that you can get done in class, especially if you’re required to take a bunch of average classes (-_-) and you’re so bored you might as well finish your homework. Supposedly it only gets reallyy tough junior year and first semester.senior year. Basically, make you get a 4.0, but don’t stress too much. The 5-6-ers are the juniors with 5+ AP’s.

^Or sophomores who enjoy procrastinating :)

People, you are making this so complicated. The real culprits are those tiger moms.

*** 5-6hrs are you serious
what is life for them anymore?
and facebook is so lame. you can live without it, better yet, don’t even make one. -_-

It takes like 2.5-3 hours ABSOLUTE max… I hate people who do something else while they’re doing their hw and then b and complain about how much they get.

That said, there are some… days where you spend the whole afternoon/night cramming or doing hw/projects.

lol I actually tried to take 5-6 hours. And I failed.

And I took every single PreAP class I can

People who take that long are almost always on Facebook chatting while doing their homework :stuck_out_tongue: meh I’m one of them, but without Facebook it’d take me 3 hours tops.

Even with Facebook up, and even with seven (technically eight, micro/macro) APs and a research course senior year, it would take me only a few hours a night to get all my work done, with the rare exception of needing to get a project or essay done. It isn’t as if I didn’t go to a competitive high school, either. I think the greatest variable in “homework” time can be attributed to studying, as I never had to dedicate too much time to it, but in tutoring, have seen what it can require.

I think another major factor is how much you can absorb in class. Personally, I’m one of those people who learns the most when I’m sitting on my own in a quite room just staring at material. Often times I won’t have any idea what the teacher is saying in class, then I go home, realize something, and bam it all falls into place an hour later. On the other hand, if you can make the most out of sitting in class for 40 minutes, maybe you just go home, breeze through whatever assignments you had without paying much attention since you already understand it, and be done a lot quicker than those who do their learning while doing homework.

When I was in 8th grade, sometimes homework could be overwhelming, esp. from my English teacher. She gave big assignments due in short time. I had to stay up late often to do her homework. I have no clue what HS will be like. 5 hours/day? so be it.

It’s different for everyone. 'Nuff said.

DD did both IB diploma and AP classes and she rarely had homework that was more than two hours. She play three varsity sports and volunteered a ton. Students tend to be bad at time management. She sometimes had projects that took longer but that was like once a month or so.

I’m surprised someone actually needs 5-6 hours HW each night. My school is pretty rigorous with IB and everything but even then, I think people manage to finish all their work and review their notes [though not everyone does] in two or three hours.

There are times when students have their EEs or ToK essays due, or cramming during exam period, but that’s not everyday!

Anyway, for all that study time, I imagine that they’d probably need to start studying right after school ends and/or not have a lot of sleep [stay up at night or get up early].

I’d HATE it if I had to spend 5-6 hours a day on homework. That’d mean I couldn’t do anything else that I love.
In the last year of middle school, I spent on average 2-3 hours a day on it. Sometimes a lot, sometimes very little. Will see what happens in high school. I guess it’ll be more.

Simple, go to school for 7 hours, then come back and live in a shell for the rest and have your meals fed to you through the door. Jk, Jk, Jk, I was just trying to think of a smart@$$ comment.

It’s just that some people have a knack for focus and determination. Unlike me, but I can manage an occasional 2-3 hours. Also, my last english teacher gave us boatloads of busy work, which was useless even for english, so I managed to decide which was necessary (like big essays and stuff) and what I could handle losing a measly 2 points off of.

AP Chemistry: 45 minutes
AP Physics B: 30-60 minutes
English Honors: 0-20 minuts
AP USH: 30-60 minutes
AP Stat: 10-20 minutes
AP Calculus BC: 0-20 minutes
Latin III: 30 minutes

Total: 2.5 hours — 4 hours

^ Like the format.

Debate: 0-30 mins
Spanish: 0-20 mins
English: 0-60 mins
History: 30 mins - 2 hours (Ridiculous sometimes)
Physics: 0-20 mins
Biology: 0-20 mins (1-2 hours if studying)
Pre Calculus: 30-60 mins

Total: 1 hour (very lucky days) - 6+ hours (if procrastinated)

I’m taking 5 APs next year without taking any last year. Not sure how I’m going to live.

My friends in APUSH had two hours of outlines per night in that class alone. That doesn’t even include their weekly essays.

I might’ve done 5 hours of homework an entire semester.
