When I was walking the dog earlier today I was thinking of those Tupperware popsicle sets we’ve talked about here before and how my mom ALWAYS had these filled in the freezer. She’d fill them with nothing special or fancy like we might these days, but she’d use lemonade, chocolate milk, kool-aid. I think she also had some recipe using Jello which was probably fancy back then!!!
I made slushy adult beverages yesterday. My husband said something like we should get out those old popsicle things for the kids but put the adult beverage in there and freeze it
I found a small baggie with ice applied to the back of your neck is very cooling. Also, there have been times that we just drive to a grocery store or mall to cool off, if needed.
Mostly I move from my air conditioned house to my air conditioned car to my air conditioned job. The only time I deliberately expose myself to the heat is at a day game at the ball park. I use a cooling towel which is pretty effective.
Some of my pickleball friends use cooling towels too. I’ll have to look into them. Thanks for the reminder.
My wife buys something called the kool tie by nomadix at rei. She has a few so I assume likes
I didn’t do a very good job of beating the heat today. Went to the Heart Walk to support a friend. Wore a white shirt, hat, shorts. Did fine on the 5k that they said would start at 9, then moved it to 8:50 but that didn’t happen. Slogged around We were getting ready to leave when one in our group had to take her daughter to the port-a-potty. As I stood there, I got dizzy so found a tent that had a tiny cement block and I sat down. Too late.
A little heat stroke (kind of ironic at the HEART walk). Met a nice EMT and Medic. Friend got the car, I got water and cold wraps for my neck. I was told to relax for the rest of the day, and I obeyed that order.
One more day of 100+. I may do nothing tomorrow too.
Dembe is definitely over this weather too! She lays like this all summer! (A fan is on high overhead)
I have to use those when we are at ball games but I sweat so much, they are pretty warm, pretty quick. Keep pouring my cold bottle of water on it but it gets warm again pretty fast from my body heat.
We live in a temperate climate but when it’s hot and we were stuck in an apartment with no A/C, I would take the kids and me to a museum, aquarium of even store or shopping mall that had A/C just to cool off. It was inexpensive and we got a bit of a break from the heat and humidity. Also, having nice cold snacks in fridge & freezer was always a great treat in the warmer weather.
Oh gosh hope you’re feeling better !
My friend moved to Atlanta and her husband asked if she wanted to go to a state park. She answered “You have two choices, the movies or the frozen food section at the grocery store.” Movies won.
Movies cost more discretionary $$$ than we had available when our kids were little, plus it was hard finding ones they’d like and be able to sit for so long. The 1st movie H and I took the kids to was 3 Musketeers. They were upset from the very beginning of the movie—the dungeon torture scene. I had to take them out and luckily the manager gave us rain checks to return for another more appropriate movie. We wandered around the mall & H stayed and watched the whole movie— without us. I told him Zi’d choose the next movie!
If you have AC but have a second floor that just doesn’t cool like the first floor….we discovered these vents last year and they have helped keep upstairs bedrooms a couple degrees cooler (or warmer in the winter) - to me well worth the price. They also make good white noise while you are sleeping!
They go on sale often - I think I paid $40-45 last year. Worth it. BIOWIND Quiet Register Booster Fan Fits 4" x 12" Register Holes, 10-Speed Smart Heating Cooling AC Vent Fan with Remote Control and Thermostat Control - Bronze https://a.co/d/fUqvUOb
Our house is the opposite. Our AC is on the second floor. Plaster walls => AC is in the attic and fed through ceiling. Then there is a duct through older S’s closer to the pantry downstairs that gets the kitchen (sort of) and the dining room.
But I did remember, last year I brought home old giant foam core boards that I propped in front to the kids’ bedrooms so we could open those doors and let the AC out, but the cats wouldn’t jump over. They’re in the attic now. I need to bring them back out. They’re ugly, but they were free and worked.
ALSO clean and fill your birdbaths daily!
Ha, that’s a good one. I’m seriously praying that my dad doesn’t take a turn for the worse in the next four months. I don’t think I can survive another trip to Texas like I had to last summer.
I was recalled to AZ from the cool of ME to move my dad and his wife into assisted living after both were in the hospital simultaneously. My brother and I are lamenting that, of course, this would happen during the most extreme heat AZ has experienced this year. They are complaining that their new apartment is too cold so they have turned the AC up to 82.
Oh, my, so that’s happening now?? I’m so sorry. Well, you’re missing the heat wave in Maine this week, at least. Maybe it will be cooler when you come back.
We finally turned on the AC (heat pump) in our bedroom. We leave the thermostat at 68. The house is super-insulated so our electricity bill won’t go up much.
