How Do You Beat The Heat?

I started college in 1980. The RAs had cut out letters that said, “Who killed JR?” and pasted them on the wall.

The construction guys/outdoor workers around here wear drytek long sleeve shirts, hats with broad brims and neck protection. The hats are very lightweight and allow air to flow through. Also UPF 50.

None wear short sleeves–the sun will eat you (not to mention lack of protection). Most lightweight fabrics don’t have the sun protection. It’s all UPF 50 and close fitting.

All carry coolers with actual ice. Some I think actually use an open cooler of ice in their trucks to keep the heat down. Another trick for your car is a very fine spray mister (just a very small one works) filed with water that you spray into your car before getting in. Usually lowers the interior temp by 10 degrees or so.

The quick dry fabric makes a huge difference–you can hose yourself off to cool down and be dry fairly quickly. I’ve taken a shirt, drenched it/ wrung it out and immediately put it back on to work outside.

The cooling towels don’t always work because they rely on low humidity to provide the cooling effect. There are some with neck towels with gel packs that absorb cold/ice water that really do work.

That is good to know, I sent them a Costco gift card to go buy the 2 pack, but worried they will be sold out in the 100 degree heat. Glad to know I can also buy them on Amazon or Costco.com if needed.

One more “beat the heat”–frozen fruit. Frozen grapes are great! They’ll cool you down fast but are addicting.

Our dog likes a few pieces of chilled watermelon which helps with hydration.

Frozen berries of all types are great—by themselves or made into smoothies.

I am the opposite! I used to love summer and dread winter. I lived for awhile in the humid tropics near the equator with no a/c and thrived in that life. Now I am 68, thin as a rail these days, and I hate sticky sweat lingering on my skin ( I’ll take multiple short, cool showers as needed, as many as four or five in a day sometimes for just a minute or two). Now I find winter invigorating and summer a little depressing in the afternoon. If I could order the weather, I’d have true winter for exactly two months each year, then a temp range anywhere between 55 and 80
the rest of the year and be perfectly happy .

As luck would have it, months ago we planned a quick getaway for my birthday this week. This short distance made a big difference. It was 100 degrees at home yesterday and 84 degrees here with a nice ocean breeze.

I was feeling bad for our LEO son in black pants, black shirt and 25+ lbs black bulletproof vest until I read your post. At least our son gets in and out of his air conditioned SUV. Hopefully your son stays hydrated and healthy. That’s tough work in nice weather, but in this heat it’s miserable.

Good choice! I live 1.5 miles from the ocean. I took a walk at the boardwalk last night. Was 98 degrees when I left my house and 84 at the boardwalk. Still super sweaty, but it didn’t make me feel like I was going to collapse like it did in my neighborhood.

Well…some of beating the heat is just waiting. After four days with temps in the 90’s…tomorrow the high will be in the low 70’s and cloudy. And Friday, the high is 69.

But wait…next week it’s supposed to go into the 80’s again…but that feels fine compared to temps near 100…and humid!

Thanks! We’ve had a great week in P-town so far. As we walked back from dinner to the inn tonight my wife and I talked about how a visit to a place like Provincetown could change the opinion of people that don’t support the LGBTQ+ community. Everyone here is so happy, and friendly, and it’s infectious. It’s a special place where everyone is welcome.

I live on the river–it can be a good 10 degrees cooler at our home vs the middle of town.

Back in Maine tonight, sleeping with the windows wide open and the cool pine air filling the bedroom.

From this — to this:

Priceless.
