I’m retired from Megacorp, but wish I had heard about the uniform concept sooner. I have recommended it to DD. DS already has a uniform - not a required one, he just wears the same style clothes every day.
^My H wears khaki pants and black socks every day. He has summer and winter shirts and likes sweater or fleece zip-up vests. Makes it easier on everybody.
I pick out my clothes the night before after consulting the weather. Fall/Winter wear is usually a athleisure dress or skirt and a top/cardigan combo over it if needed. Footless tights. Shoes or booties. Spring/summer dress or skirt as well with appropriate shoes. Occasionally I wear pants or jeans but I really prefer dresses/skirts.
I wear black pants almost every day - black jeans or pants, if I have a meeting dressy black pants. I have upgraded to the more narrow fitting pants that are in style these days. I rarely wear dresses or skirts because I don’t like my legs. Occasionally in the winter if I can wear tights. I wear comfortable shoes, including dark slip-on sneaker-like shoes because of my bad feet. Very different from 15-20 years ago when the guys all wore shirt and tie and I wore much more dressy clothes.
Winter or summer I dress in layers as my office is always too hot or too cold. I don’t plan what I wear, unless I have a meeting that week and then make sure to keep the “go to meeting” outfit for that day.
I very much admire the look of a uniform and women who repeat a few good pieces. The more you pare down, the more I admire you. My goal is 10 pieces a season and I do a lot of layering and mix and match and only wear one designer. And only dresses. If I tried to accumulate enough garments for two weeks in different outfits, I wouldn’t get enough cost per wear out of my clothes.
Less in my closet always feels like more to me because I can see what is there and it’s easy to dress. And I love it all.
I try to plan the week, or at least 3 days in advance. The weather forecast plays a big role, as well as what meetings/who I will be seeing that day. If I know I have a meeting with a vendor who dresses very chicly, then I try to take it up a notch that day. If I plan on going to the gym directly from work, then I make to sure to wear something that will easily fit in the locker and fold up into my bag for the way home - usually that means a dress, b/c it i s just 1 thing to worry about.
I grab the front underwear (I put things in back after washing). If the panties are black with pink flowers, I’ll wear black pants and a pink sweater, short or long sleeved depending on weather.
Well, not all the time. If I want to wear my new blue top, I’ll grab blue panties.
I love clothes and have lots of them. We are business casual with jeans on Friday. I decide in the morning what I feel like wearing- based on weather, what I have going on that day and what I might be doing after work. I’ve been gravitating towards LulaRoe leggings with a longer top over them and sweater. Usually low or higher boots this time of year. Some days skinny dress pants and a blazer or sweater. I don’t have a plan for what I wear. I decide quickly once I’m in the closet.
@bookworm Thanks for introducing the topic of undies! :"> I don’t coordinate, and then I’m sometimes sorry at various points throughout the day. Like when I’m wearing a raspberry top and kind of have that in my peripheral vision all day, and then I discover periodically that I’m wearing fire-engine red undies. NOT a good combo! Clearly I need to put more thought into this!
@LasMa. Don’t worry too much. I work in a trauma unit twice a week and despite what your mother probably told you we are way too busy to notice if patients are color coordinated or have clean undies.
I have very few nice clothes so my hospital peers alway see me in black or grey slacks and a sweater. When doing parish work I’m usually in my home aide uniform of khaki slacks and a powder blue shirt since I do home care in the morning and church in afternoon. If I have on dark slacks or a skirt people panic thinking I’m coming from a funeral.
I decide in the morning based on the weather and what I’m going to do, but wardrobe is similar no matter what.
Meeting clients for the first time: nicer black pants, plain t-shirt or button up blouse, nice sweater or blazer, Mary Jane shoes, earrings
Meeting clients again or possibly climbing around attics: nice jeans or cords, plain t-shirt, sweater, Merrels
Working at home : less nice jeans, or today yoga pants because I want to use the basement gym later, t-shirt, sweater, slippers
I have a uniform of dark pants, colored t-shirts and neutral sweaters (gray, black, oatmeal). I think I’m dressed up if I put on my earrings.
Oh and I have a special uniform for zoning board meetings. Black pants or skirt, charcoal gray or black twin set, earrings. The Mary Jane shoes or black boots.
Famous designers also wear uniforms. When something works for you, why change?
Almost all my pants are black or gray (thanks to other CC fashion threads), though I also have a couple of navy pairs. Today I’m wearing black athleisure pants, black/white/gray top, gray 3/4 sleeve sweater and sneakers.
European women don’t think twice about wearing an outfit several days in a row, until it is dirty. I don’t know why we worship variety here. When I was working, I did wear the same pants several days in a row, varying the blouse, sweater, and scarf.
I wear a lot of dark slacks or jeans. I work mostly from home but go to meetings several times a month and sometimes travel for work. When I’m the speaker, I will dress up a bit more with a scarf and/or perhaps wear a dress. I mostly dress in classic styles and am comfortable. Our weather doesn’t vary much, except I do keep it in mind if I travel since I am not used to temps of below 70! I do lots of layering when I travel.
I don’t wear any makeup and keep my hair straight and short in a no fuss easycare style.
I suppose my office is considered business casual so I don’t need to wear suits or dresses but I do like to wear skirts with tights and boots or booties so I have lots of sweaters that I wear with various skirts or i might wear a sleeveless top with a cardigan. I also wear black pants and have many pairs, also navy, grey, etc. I can’t be comfortable in heels really and no one needs to wear heels in my office so mostly flats when not wearing boots. In the summer I wear more skirts or cropped pants although last year’s wide legged style not flattering on me at all. When I have to go to conferences I have a company logo shirt that I wear with usually a black skirt or pants and a black blazer in which case you can’t really see the company logo.
My office is “business casual” and the unofficial rule is that Friday is jeans day. However I looked up the dress code policy and their is nothing said about jeans. I have started to wear jeans 2-3 days /week. On the other days I usually wear black pants. The office is cold so I usually wear sweaters even in the summer.
I guess I’m either lazy or low maintenance when it comes to dressing…even for work.
I have slacks, shirts, skirts, sweaters in my closet.
I go into my closet in the morning. If I pick a pair of slacks or a skirt, I choose a sweater or some other top to wear with them. Sometimes I put a scarf on too.
If I pick a dress…I’m good to go.
I really don’t fuss about this.
I just answered a different question than what was asked.
Starting over - I consider the weather, what I’ve already worn recently, how far I’m likely to have to walk that day (I work in a large complex), and what meetings I have, and go for there.
Usually black, grey or blue pants, with a top and jacket or sweater. Sometimes a dress or skirt. Almost always earrings and a necklace.
I work in a small govt office that I have been with almost 20 years. I don’t have to deal with the public and my boss is casual. SO I usually wear “nice” dark blue jeans or white/Khacki jeans and a nice sleeveless blouse (now that I am 50). I wear flats because I cannot deal with heels anymore. I recommend my externs dress nicer than I do, because they are still looking for work whereas I will die at my desk.
My GF, who is pretty anal retentive, picks 5 outfits at the beginning of the week and puts them in a certain spot in her closer. One outfit must be a skirt/dress (for whatever reason). Then she just does one a day in whatever order.
