Be careful with salad dressing packets. One time I was really struggling to open one and squirted it on the woman sitting next to me. I was so embarrassed. I offered her money to get her blouse cleaned, but she wouldn’t take it plus we were headed to the Bahamas and I was worried she wouldn’t have access to a dry cleaner/laundry facility.
Looks like the major airlines disagree with Duffy. I guess this is an attempt to pre-empt the “but I dressed nice, and my flight still sucked” backlash. United, Southwest, & American Airlines passengers who wear jeans on flight urged to make subtle change immediately
I never fly wearing jeans. They are just not as comfortable as knit pants.
We don’t fly much but we’ve started wearing loose cargo pants for the comfort and the pockets. I like to have my phone, which has an attached pocket with credit cards securely on me in a buttoned pocket. I wear a loose blouse or polo shirt and always a sweatshirt in case it’s cold or, as on one overnight flight, to cover my nose as the young man in a hoodie sitting next to me slept with his head on his tray and farted throughout the night.
And tying in with plane snacks, after a national parks vacation last year my husband felt he needed to carry on all our uneaten snacks so at TSA he removed granola bars and other things from upper pockets and a huge bag of trail mix that he’d stuffed into one of the lower pockets. Much to the amusement (thankfully) of the TSA agent who said “you’ve got ALL the snacks!”
I love and need POCKETS. I prefer them with zippers or at least some fasteners so things don’t fall out of them. My kids don’t wear tight clothing on flights either. I don’t have any long skirts with pockets or might consider them. I’m fine with knit pants and layers so I can add and remove as needed. I admit I wear polyester and have for decades with no issues.
Yep, nylon melts and you can even get burns from it going down those slides.
I always wear cotton pants, jeans or otherwise, when on an airplane just in case. Another aerospace/big airplane company retiree here. ![]()
Why just in case ? Are you referencing body parts touching seats ?
In case one needs to evacuate a plane. Because a plane is a giant container of a flammable liquid, evacuation may involve running through or out of a fire. You don’t want clothing that welds solid to the skin and begins to burn. That’s where sturdy shoes come in handy, too.
Like Bunsen says, for safety. Leather shoes, no flip flops, and passport on my person.
Even if there isn’t a fire, I wouldn’t want to go down a slide with bare legs or some kind of polyester on them.
Well, thanks for the heads up. I have never previously thought about not wearing any polyester against my skin and now will consider that. On second thought, I will continue to just dress as I do and have been doing for decades.
If concerned about fires in the airplane (or otherwise), perhaps clothing like that found at Fire Resistant Clothing | Nomex Pants, Shirts & More may be desired.
Typically sandwiches (i.e. turkey & cheese, etc) are relatively low odor. It’s grandma’s warm spicey herring stew and cooked broccoli salad that can make my eyes cross. I do ignore it but wish they would just think, would that strong smell bother anyone?
Not the jersey mikes one I just experienced in front of me in Vegas.
I’m guessing it had dressing of some sort.
Not sure the meat but eat your sandwich in the terminal please.
Sometimes there is barely enough time to get the sandwich.
But I do dress nicely when I fly, so I think I should get a bye on my food choices.
Looking nice trumps stinky food!!!
Note to self - pack cheese sticks and pretzels if an in-flight meal is needed.
If I’m your seat mate, and those pretzel are crunchy, I might go ballistic ![]()
I like to have something to eat on a plane - helps the time pass. A fav is something like trail mix.
But if I’m being honest, the seating is so close, the whole idea of eating that close to a stranger is just not ok to me.
Just hope you are not sitting next to someone with a milk, wheat, nut, and peanut allergy that is severe enough that just a bit of crumbs or dust would be problematic.
Well that’s part of the point! Everyone is too close together on a plane to NOT being bothersome by eating nearly everything!
From nuts to dairy to perfume to whatever else - it’s a wonder we survive!
