How do you go about getting compensation from an airline?

Seems airlines “make” so many problems/errors. When do you know if it’s something to pursue compensation for or not?

OP’s situation = definitely.

But other screw ups??

For instance, D1 was traveling from Ohio to Bordeaux France yesterday/today. Obstacles thus far:

  • 9 days prior her Air France 2nd of 3 legs flight was cancelled. But switched to Delta, same time, same city. All taken care of by AF.
  • Because of the switch she could not check in online - which she didn’t know until she couldn’t check in online.
  • Checked in at 1st airport in person but was then told when she arrived at end of first leg she would have to check in at gate again to receive an actual ticket.
-Checked in at that gate and flew to stop #2.
-Before boarding at stop #2 for leg 3 found out that stop #1 had “inadvertently” cancelled the rest of her flights. So she could not board.
  • Had to re-book and take a flight a couple hours later to get to final destination.
  • Got to final destination and discovered that luggage was still at stop #2.
  • Hoping to get her luggage tomorrow. Hopefully the saga will end then!

Nothing was AWFUL but several steps inconvenient and quite stressful. Worth a contact with the airlines or no???

I dunno, I tend to send an email to customer service so they know what happened and prrjaoz could save another person some grief. Often I get an e-very for $100-300 for my email, which reduces the price of a future flight within 12 months.

Folks…this poster said she already got $300…it sounds like she wants a lot more than that.

Can she GET more than that amount?

I had a flight that was canceled and rebooked four times last fall - it was a 7:15 am flight that ended up finally taking off at noon the next day. I actually got two separate vouchers totaling $600 initiated by the airline, fortunately. None of this was weather-related either, it was a combination of mechanical issues, flight not actually being rebooked correctly (and thus when we arrived at 5 am for a 5:45 flight, TSA was closed and there was no 5:45 am flight), crew working too long.

She should at a minimum be reimbursed for the unused portion of her ticket OR the tickets she had to purchase to complete her trip, whichever is greater AND the $300 voucher per person.

Not sure if she can get more than that but I’d try if I had those experiences.

Here’s some suggestions from The Points Guy.

@abasket I think you should definitely write or call the airline to see if your D can get some compensation- that is a lot of screw ups for one trip! Hope your D has a great time in France though - Ive never been but have always wanted to visit.

@thumper1 I didn’t accept the $300 voucher yet because I didn’t want United to think they were done with me.

I feel like they definitely owe me for 1/2 my original ticket (including seat upgades) and the ticket I had to buy to get home. I really think they should also honor the unusable vouchers they gave us for the hotel and shuttle since they weren’t able to provide that (they gave us the paper voucher but then were only able to follow through for a few passengers who got on the one shuttle.) If they were good at customer service they should go a little above and beyond and compensate us for the food they never provided and our basic time and suffering for telling us they would get us out of the airport then sitting us to sleep in the cold when they couldn’t figure out how to do it.

I sent an email thought the United website (they have a form you fill out for compliments and complaints) as well as sent a DM through Twitter yesterday. I haven’t heard back yet but I haven’t used Twitter much so I’m not sure I did it correctly - will check again today. My friend who was with me only got responses through Twitter so far.

Hah - just checked Twitter and they responded with, “sorry you were not happy with the compensation offered, please respond to that email with your information.” Meanwhile my friend has had a three day conversation with them on Twitter - maybe I sent it to a different name than she did, I’ll check today.

I also went to the American Airlines website and sent an email to thank them and let them know how helpful their agents were in Hayden. Heard back from them within a few hours!
