How do you pack for a trip?

Would they ship outside of Japan? Freight could be expensive.

Airline travel - carryon (packing cubes) and personal item. Much like many others. I make a general list. Spare bedroom has two twin beds. I pile possibilities on one and final cut goes on the other. I have to do all laundry before packing, even if I’m definitely not taking. This helps arriving home to already have clean laundry for a few days. Basic color palette. Set out by days, although I don’t always stick with that plan when there. I’m obsessive and stress about being ready so I start 2-5 days before trip.

Car travel, now that we’re only 2 in a small SUV vs formerly 5 in a minivan - throw in a whole lot more than I know I’ll need and make decisions later. I do still make a list. Start 1-2 days before.

I “stage” in a guest room up to a week before. I just stumbled on “packing sudoku” and I did a modified version for my trips this summer.

Well, I am mostly packed except for some personal hygiene items, medications, and chargers. It wasn’t too bad once I got going. I think the anticipation is worse than the action.

This is a driving trip, so I’m not limited. I’m sure I’m taking more than I need. I think I am more organized and efficient when I travel by air.

Most of our vacations recently have been beach-related, so:

  • My item is my old blue Eddie Bauer backpack, still with a small hole burned into it during a long-ago Chem lab at UW. Anyway, into that goes our snorkel gear, sunblock, and aloe-based gels to help ease the pain if/when the sunblock fails.
  • My carry-on roller suitcase holds the clothes and toiletries. (as does hers…). I pack shorts, swim trunks, t-shirts, maybe one or two Polo shirts, the usual undergarments, maybe one or two pairs of short socks, and sneakers. (I typically wear sandals or flip-flops on the plane…). If we’re flying in the winter, I might put on a long-sleeve shirt or sweater out of necessity, but I do not want to be lugging around a coat…
  • Her item is her purse. Sometimes she smuggles snacks. (as she is wont to do when we go out to a movie…)

I went to Europe for a month this spring with only a carryon and my backpack. Since I was changing towns every 3 to 4 days, I decided I would pack only for a long weekend and not a month. Everything was either navy, light blue, khaki or white. All mix and match. I still had a couple of things I didnt wear so next time I will try to take even less.

By the time I got home, I had decided my toiletries took up entirely too much space and weight. I already had shampoo/conditioner/sunscreen in pouches that collapse as the contents are used up, but I purchased several different mini refillable containers and transferred everything else to a tiny little container of some sort. My toiletry bag is now a fraction of the volume and weight.

I never bring shampoo and conditioner to Europe; I purchase there and leave what’s left. Cuts down on the size of my toiletries bag. I’m a big fan of carryon only; haven’t checked a bag in many years other than when we went to Iceland and we brought camping gear and food.

I tend to be an overpacker, but I’m trying to be better.
I may start prepping my toiletries, vitamins, etc. several days before. I use small refillable containers for shampoo and several other things.
The clothes I’m thinking about taking all go in a room, and then I start making decisions. I’ve gravitated from black bottoms towards navy blue. I use packing cubes and I always make sure I have the toiletries I really care about and an extra outfit, plus a swimsuit if I’m going somewhere I’ll need it, in my backpack carryon. I usually have at least 3 pairs of shoes - walking sandals, sneakers of some kind, and maybe some flats, booties or dressier sandals. We often do a fair amount of hiking, which would require hiking boots. Both H and I tend to fill all available packing space, and more if it’s a driving trip.

I thought about doing that but I have crazy hair and a system. I decided I couldn’t risk it. 3oz of each was plenty for the month, so it’s not much space. plus, if I puchased there I would have to have carried that from town to town. The only time it would have saved space is on the outbound trip.

I have done trips of 4-5 days with just a personal item size backpack (helpful when flying Spirit-class), though these were warm weather trips without need for dressy clothing and 0-1 pair of shoes besides that ones I wear on the plane.

I am not too picky about kind of soap and shampoo, so I just use what is provided by the hotel. I have noticed that hotels have mostly switched to having big shampoo and conditioner dispensers in the shower, rather than the tiny bottles.

If I do need a full size carry on, I put the most essential stuff in a personal item size backpack that I will remove in case the overhead bins are full and gate checking is needed. For the full size carry on, I use a non-wheeled backpack, since wheels and associated hardware make the bag smaller inside and heavier.

If you only need 3oz that makes sense. I have hair that’s longer (below my shoulders) and it’s quite dry (and there’s a lot of it) so I need a lot of conditioner. I don’t wash it very often but when traveling I like to do it every few days. If D22 is along her hair is even longer and thicker (though not as dry) so we’ll buy full sized bottles and make a good dent in them on a 10-14 day trip. I can’t use the stuff in most hotels as it’s generally not good for dry hair that’s prone to frizz - often it’s combo shampoo/conditioner which doesn’t work for me at all. You’re right though that you have to lug it during the trip but I use a small roller bag and this method allows me to do carryon only which is the goal!

I’m of a certain age with hair I color for a not insubstantial amount. I am particular and picky about the products I use.

I’ll pack my own. My H on the other hand uses whatever the hotel brand is.

When I do adventure “touristy” travel I can pack for a week using only my backpack. I have a Vera Bradley (featherweight fabric) that holds everything I need. On those trips I only bring athleta style super light pants and T-shirts that fold to nothing and silk undies and pajamas. I use the hotel shampoo and no make up.

Beach vacations are also very easy for me since we spend most of our time in ocean/pool and only do a few fancy dinners so I pack 2 dresses and the rest is just swim suites and covers. It takes me longer to figure out which books to bring/download. If it is in the US I buy shampoo/conditioner and sunscreen locally. If a country that’s not easy to do that I have bar (solid) shampoo and bring a bunch of 3oz sunscreens.

Worse packing is when I go overseas to see friends and family. Tons of dinners, meetings, events, photos etc etc. It takes me at least a week to pack. I lay everything on the spare bed and try to minimize since I only take my travelpro carry on. On those trips I only fly US airlines so I don’t have to deal with the international size. I would love to check a bag but I do at least 2 cities with train and can’t deal with a suitcase on my own. I try to have 3 pairs of pants, a pair of shorts and at least 5 tops and 2 dresses. I usually don’t wear dresses but the last few years I found out that some dresses are lighter and easier to pack. I admit that year long I have my eye on items that might do well on those trips. This year I bought a pair of cute cork sandals that weigh nothing and a pair of black pants from Abercrombie that can be worn with sneakers or heels. I also use collapsible pouches for shampoo etc. One year I completely missed the mark and I ended up having to shop for a couple of outfits there which I guess is a solution and I shouldn’t be that stressed. Lately, I also added some fancy but not expensive jewelry because they can transform an outfit.

For extended weekend driving trips, I pack the morning of in about 20-30 minutes. I always make a packing list for my longer and/or overseas vacations. The last list, I just left in my room. After I pack, I’ll glance at it and see if I missed anything. For driving trips, it’s easier because I just throw my running shoes and a pair of crocs into a recyclable bag that also contains any snacks, drinks, and my book for the car.

I guess I’m weird (well I know I’m weird…) but I don’t worry about what clothes to bring any more than I worry about what underwear/socks to bring. Most everything I own is solid and comfortable. And I figure - who really cares what I wear? On vacations, I’ll never see these people again, and my family knows who I am. For longer trips, I’ll throw these in the suitcase the night before we leave, and just leave the toiletries/misc stuff for the morning.

I’m also weird that I HATE dragging carry-ons and a large personal item through the airport, worrying about if I’ll have enough space (I don’t have any special status or class), and if I can fit all my liquids in a little baggie. I love being in airports and that just ruins it for me. I also hate worrying about if everything is going to fit. On airport trips, we are going to be buying souvenirs for people. We usually change hotels often. I don’t want to be cramming things and stress about stuff. We always each check a suitcase. H’s is usually 25-28 pounds. Mine is usually 30-32, because I bring all the toiletries and communal stuff. I just carry my little bookbag that’s at most half full. I need lots of room under my economy seat for my 35-36" legs.

I always bring my pharmacy with me, but I have that always packed in a packing cube/zipped bag in the closet. I’ll glance at it for domestic trips, mostly making sure i have enough Nyquil. For overseas trips (roughly once every 18 months), I’ll pull everything out and check expiration dates and makes sure everything is well stocked in case we both get sick for 7-10 days.

Same. The skincare brand I use sometimes has gifts with purchase and always free samples which are tiny but perfect for traveling so I always choose ones of my usual products to have for traveling. Both the shampoo brands I like sell 2oz travel sizes so I get those too.

Most of my air travel has been solo for work. While I always carry-on I have developed an irrational fear of not being able to find overhead storage room, not being able to get my suitcase up there or not being able to easily get it down without smacking someone! So stupid, but I stress about this until I’m settled in my seat! I think I need a newer lighter weight carry on so I don’t fret so much!

Yes weight is an issue for me too. I always consider how light my items are apart from volume. It gets harder and harder to put my carry on up and I am more open now to help from younger folks…

My husband and I rarely do “his” and “her” suitcases. I have a wheeled garment bag that is the size of a 21 inch carryon, so that is where the majority of our clothes goes. The remaining stuff goes either into a beat up 21 year old Tumi (that soon will have the honor of being Alaska’s million miler) or in our personal backpack/tote. Since packing for a trip and vacuuming carpets are the two activities on Earth my husband hates with a passion, I’m the master packer (and I do all vacuuming as well).
