lizzardfire- your school sounds a bit like mine! What were your stats? You got in- I want to know if I have a chance. I’m a junior, 5th in my class as of now, IB diploma candidate (basically same as taking all AP’s) w/almost all A’s. Got into the National Merit scholarship competition this year w/a 2100 PSAT… should I bother to get my hopes up? My math scores aren’t the hottest b/c I work kind of slowly…

Well I’d like to point out that although I got in, I got in off of waitlist (I was originally waitlisted).

My stats are as follows:

GPA 4.00 unweighted (not sure what weighted is)
SAT 800/800/760 M/R/W
SAT II 800/780/770 US History / Math ii / Chemistry

AP Exams Chem and US History: 5

Currently taking six AP classes(Macroeconomics, Government, Calculus AB, Physics B, English Lit, Psychology)

I’ve got more I can list but that is the basic rundown. You might want to ask my friend treekid226 (his AIM sn) (who is in IB at our school and was accepted, not waitlisted) about his stats… I know like he has a very close to 4.0 uw average, is in HL Math and Calc BC this year, very involved in orchestra, etc etc.

One of my dad’s friend is a caltech alumni and he said they call it CT when he was at caltech. not CIT because it rhymes with “em-eye-tee”. lol.

You need to find someone old school enough to call this place TPI.

um, lizzardfire told me to post my stats…

him on AIM: hey if you get a chance post your stats on the caltech forum in one of the threads "<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=187847&page=2">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=187847&page=2</a>"</p>

So… i will… These are my stats at the time of application:

GPA 4.00 unweighted (not sure what weighted is)
SAT 800/760/650 M/R/W
SAT II 800,800,800,650 Physics, Biology (E), Math ii, French

AP exams:
5-physics; 5-calc AB; 4-Euro History; 4-English Language

IB Exams:
Math Methods SL 7; Physics SL 6 (I took IB bio as a class, but did not take the exam; we were only allowed to take two IB exams as juniors)

Current classes: Discrete Math (IB HL Math Methods), AP Calculus BC, English IV, French IV, AP/IB Chemistry SL, IB Contemporary History (History of the Americas)
Extracurriculars: Orchestra (have been concertmaster in the past), composing music, violin, piano, organ at church as job, participated in a computer programming camp at UCF for two summers
Research: I wrote an IB Extended Essay anout analyzing algorithms that determine the primality of integers.
Recommendations: Awesome recs from teachers who knew me fairly well. One of them was the Computer Science professor at UCF who ran the camp and is my Discrete Math teacher. He was also my IB Extended Essay advisor and was pretty impressed with the work.
Volunteering: Winter Park Towers (a nursing home).

Yes, I received admission into Caltech. I got deferred during the Early Admission round, but received admission into Regular Admission. I turned down my spot already, as I have decided to go to Rice University instead. However, I wish all of you luck who are going to Caltech, who are applying to Caltech, and just those of you who are reading the forum as penguins do… that is… for the halibut.

Good day. For what it’s worth… I didn’t get into MIT.

I live about 15 minutes away from Caltech, yet the majority of the kids at my school don’t know where it is. Someone thought it was in Massachusetts. :(

“Someone thought it was in Massachusetts.”

I knew I shouldn’t have visited CC today. Oh well. I guess one musn’t cry over spilt milk.

I know what you guys mean. I’m around the University of Chicago a lot. In case you don’t know, the U of C is one of those top-notch schools that the general population doesn’t know about.

“Someone thought it was in Massachusetts.”

I saw a post on the High School forum, actually, that said something to the effect of “Princeton is Cali, right?”
I was -slightly- surprised.

Some people around here are surprised to find at that, no, Caltech is not a knock-off ITT Tech.

… or is it?

Heh… So far I’ve found three people who confused Caltech for Cal Poly.

-Oren

Speaking of which, what should I say when people say “What’s the California Institute of Technology?” I often want to give my short answer “It’s MIT with the word Massachusetts replaced,” but that’s kind of insulting. Other times, I want to start giving a detailed history of the school starting with Throop until they regret asking.

What do you guys/girls think?

Give a long painful lecture and then send them here: http://www.scit-scu.edu/</a></p>

“At our campus, we don’t require that you compose an essay, submit letters of recommendation, or partake in lengthy exams.” Sweet!

I’m transferring.

This really is disgusting. Caltech was my dream school when I was a kid, because of a magazine article I read about Ditch Day and the Rose Bowl hack. My senior year in high school, I knew a LOT more about Caltech than about any other school with a strong science program. The physicists at Caltech were my heros.

Alas, I didn’t know how to deal with the financial aid issues successfully at that age, and I hadn’t had proper mathematics preparation in high school for a school like Caltech. So the only place I ended up applying was State U, and there I didn’t even take a science major.

Today I know two buddies of my son who have already focused on Caltech as a favorite school, and am involved enough with math coaching and science fair mentoring in my town that I have occasion to hear what math-liking and science-liking young people look for in a college. Caltech is definitely on the radar screen of most young people who are ready for it. And it is definitely known to the employers who matter, and to the scientific community in general. I hang out on this forum because Caltech has plenty enough reputation for me to be interested in what current applicants are doing.

tokenadult is right – certainly, everyone who “matters” knows exactly what Caltech is and how good it is. If you’re looking for random, man-on-the-street prestige, go to Harvard. If you’re looking for an education, come to Caltech :-D

Yes, what you are saying is definitely true tokenadult. However, it is still kind of amusing how a considerable part of the general population hasn’t heard of Caltech (probably due to the size, the lack of popularity of science in our society, and no football team ;-)).

Yep, I think “no football team” is the key variable here. It’s time to redo the Rose Bowl hack.

I’ve got my Beavers Football (Undefeated since 1993) sweatshirt coming soon :P
