The two best medical schools in Texas are UT Southwestern and Baylor College of Medicine.
Southwestern is probably the better school, according to those familiar with both. Its campus is huge. It has a big endowment, is strong in research, and has Nobel laureates on the faculty. Parkland Hospital is top rate.
Baylor has a “deserved?” stronger reputation. But both schools are research oriented. The drop in Baylor ranking may be related to its dissociation with Methodist Hospital, one of its two main teaching hospitals (Methodist private, Ben Taub county). This was related to or led to Baylor building its own hospital. which is partially built but status is in limbo because of funding. Baylor has major financial issues, one of the reasons for its consideration to merge with Rice University. Other affiliations are solid: Texas Children’s Hospital, DeBakey VA Hospital and rotations through St. Luke’s and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
However, the above should not affect the awesome education of its graduates. Basic Science faculty, research and teaching remain strong. The rotations at Methodist Hospital were easily replaced.
