How Do You Sell Stuff?

I take most of my stuff to our local thrift store. I don’t make any money, but it’s a tax write-off. They’ll take anything, or almost anything. And the stuff they don’t sell themselves, they ship to a distribution center. I hate throwing out when the stuff is good quality, even if it’s been sitting in my closet for awhile. Heck, I’ve even taken things with their price tags still on. (shhhh, don’t tell my DH).

I just can’t get into eBay though. Seems like too much work.

I helped my folks unload some of their antiques. Large pieces that none of us kids could use. We found that with a recent appraisal in hand and a receipt from Goodwill, the deduction off their taxes was the best option for everyone. And it gave my folks a warm fuzzy feeling.

As my FIL just passed, we’ll be going through the house. My MIL, who passed two years ago, had a lot of antiques that she wants to keep in the family. It will likely all be boxed up and put in storage.

My parents are having an auction for their household goods. (They sold their home and are moving into a retirement home.) After paying the auctioneer service to advertise and set up, their commission, and the dumpster he suggested for things that don’t sell, I’ll be relieved if my parents don’t end up having to write them a check when everything is settled. The glassware they collected does not bring the top dollar they paid when they purchased it back in the 80s, and I’m thinking now we should have just donated everything. It’s a lot of work for nothing.

I think that you are getting rid of things and just keeping what you love is a great idea. It will probably make you feel lighter and freer. There are some ways to sell stuff that are not too hard. I am not sure about auctions just because i have not had much experience with them. There are plenty of people that will help you to sell stuff.

E-bay can be a pain if you are doing it yourself, but there are people that will sell for you and take just a percentage. The same is true of a consignment shop. All of these places are different basically because they are owned by individuals. Some will set the price while others will let you. I think the fact is that if you are very concerned about getting the most amount of money then you will have to work harder at it.

You could always do a pick up only sell with E-bay or with craigslist. That way you don’t have to worry about packing something up. You will still have to worry about the exchange of the items so be sure to stay safe when dealing with strangers.

One thing…when selling on ebay…have the purchaser pay the shipping costs.

Items like silverware and dishes might fetch more selling by the piece than by the set, especially if your set is missing some pieces. Folks having pieces missing from their set look on websites like eBay for replacement pieces and they will pay you a premium price.
