How do you shop for clothes?

I’m a sporadic shopper. I hate to HAVE to buy something so try to keep something in my closet suitable for various occasions. If I hit a great sale, I stock up. Pants go in drawers usually. I like to buy clothes that are great for travel–light weight, no wrinkle, quick dry. So in that vein it’s dark colors for bottoms, colorful tops, and dresses that are what I call “wash and wad” (super easy care fabric that you can cram in a suitcase–no garment bags for me!)

Cut my hair which turned out to be my biggest fashion statement. All of a sudden I was “taller and thinner”. I didn’t want to say I was also wearing platforms and had my “shrink a size-type” pants on…

I like this game! :)

I have a large selection of colors and shades. I don’t think I have brown. I have a buttload of whites, greys, blacks, and pastels.

Oh, goodness. I do not know how many clothes I have. I’m going on three closets. Not sure how all my clothes are going to fit when that three goes to two!

I fold my jeans. I have two drawers for jeans and two drawers for shorts. They took up too much of the hanger space in my closet. Fortunately, based in my location, I’m able to store away the majority of my jeans for the majority of the year leaving space for more shorts. Can’t have enough shorts!

I have earth tones, browns, lodens, greens, off white & mushroom. Most of my life my red hair was so bright, it clashed with other colors.
Works well since I am either hiking with the dog or working in the yard.
However, now my hair has faded to more of a strawberry/ golden blond, so I am looking for a little more color.
We only have one closet between the two upstairs bedrooms, so I have to admit, that I store things in another room that I promptly forget about.
I only shop if I really have to.
Im more likely to look through my daughters discards to see if there is anything that I can squeeze into.
I often dress like I am headed to yoga. ( I just went through the Athleta catalog).

I like discount stores, like Ross and Marshallsand Nordstrom Rack. I buy in multiples if something works. Because my sizing is a little weird, it is hard to just buy on short notice for an event. I tend to buy and hang onto things for years.

I do like thrift store shopping. I was looking for a couple of basic skirts that fit well in my size at multiple retail stores. Kind of gave up. Lo and behold, two similar and exactly what I was looking for skirts that fit perfectly at Goodwill. Took two trips there to find. 4.99 each. Brand new looking, as well.

I got a beautiful trench coat for $10 last year - classic design.

My D is babysitting her little cousin this week and asked if I’d stop by Goodwill yesterday to find some “dress up clothes” for her. I did, and also found a pretty WHBM summer dress for my D at the Goodwill half-price (blue tags this week) of only $4. As I got into the car, the radio was playing “Thriftshop”. Perfect.

LOL, sseamom! Perfect.

Don’t you love it when that happens? I stopped by Goodwill yesterday and came home with a cute paisley patterned Ann Taylor skirt for $3.99. All shades of greens and white…great for summer with a cute t-shirt. Really liked that it has a cotton underskirt so it’s not flimsy

Do you remember when “no one” shopped at GW (or admitted it)?

Ah, TempeMom, I grew up in New England as one of 5 kids. The saying there is “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.” At least, that is how I was raised. My mom came from a very affluent family but dove headfirst into frugality upon marrying a small corner store owner and having 5 kids in a smallish town. The "thrill of the hunt "at discount stores, yard sales and Goodwill type places was part of my childhood. And we weren’t alone. My hometown is also the hometown of a VERY famous actor, and his mom was a customer at the shop where m mother worked in her later years (a resale type shop, of course). They bonded over their thriftshop finds.

I’m glad Macklemore made it cool, though-my 14 yo is all about vintage looks these days.

Our town was so small that there was no Goodwill/Thrift store. There was an Army/Navy store. I remember getting a navy blue pea coat fr, there one winter when I was a kid.

My Mom was a terrific seamstress. She made a lot of my clothes. She even made my prom dress for for junior prom. It was a Gunne Sax pattern (remember those?) and it was beautiful. I was so proud to wear it even though I was the only girl there wearing a homemade dress.

I don’t mind shopping. I shop intermittently. I don’t need work attire and mainly wear jeans and yoga pants. I have a few stores and brands that work for me. Fossil, Lucky, jCrew and sometimes Nordstroms.Cropped chinos, linen and sometimes shorts in the summer. I wear linen dresses in summer but other seasons I never wear a dress or skirt unless I have an event. For shoes I wear mainly Toms. I find they fit my hard to fit feet. Rarely wear heels. I shop for events but now have a few things in my closet so I can sometimes shop my closet.
I also usually shop before a big vacation. Usually just a few new things.
Jeans and pants are both hung and folded on a shelf.
My closet has lots of white, gray, navy and black. For color I wear a lot of rust, burgundy, olive green, orange and fushia pink.

Our goodwill is small and has a tiny parking lot so I never go there. I do sometimes hit up a couple of other thrift shops when my D’s need jeans. I also will check Crossroads a resale shop if I want high end denim.
I don’t need high end or designer wear but I am super picky about fabric.
I grew up hating my clothes. My clothes were always hand me downs and I was stick skinny and everything was always huge on me. Our shoes came from A place called Shoe Market that had cheap shoes. I think my toes are permanently curled under from wearing shoes that were too small. If I got new it was always from K Mart or a place called Zody’s. I remember being so happy in high school getting a job and finally being able to wear what other kids wore. Levi cords and wallabies and earth shoes from Thom Mcann. I thought May Co was a luxury store.

We have a huge Salvation Army thrift shop near me…I drop off a couple of large bags of clothes and household items every few weeks. Some of the clothes I give away are really quite fabulous and I often wonder who snags them - they must get a little thrill when they spot a cute Missoni top or whatever. It makes me happy to imagine that happening!

I traveled to a special event this past weekend. Because I drove, I brought five different really nice dresses and shoes from my closet to wear. All would have looked fine. However, the afternoon of the event, I went on a shopping outing with a HS friend. I found a 6th perfect dress at Marshall’s (Ralph Lauren…$150 retail) for $49.99. I bought it…and that is what I wore!

Guess that sort of summarizes how I shop!
