how does columbia compare to other top ranked schools?

Duke degrees are useleses.

Maybe some people are really that deluded.

Columbia University is an amazing institution. In addition, it’s in New York City, one of the most, if not the most, popular city in the country. In the words of Edward B. Fiske, Columbia’s location trumps those of the other ivies, hands down.

FIRST OFF …I AM NOT A ■■■■■!

second…you people have the nerve to call a duke degree useless? no wonder america is going to hell…all of its citizens are arrogant, war-mongering people…who love to kill iraqi citizens…pathetic country and people

■■■■■.

10char

■■■■■.

Also, is he sending anyone else ill-conceived, vaguely threatening and poorly spelled PMs? I’m scared.

the ■■■■■ has crawled out from under the bridge!

looks like yall don’t wanna say the obvious…duke>>>>>>>columbia

This thread is getting to be too funny!

Duke degrees are useleses. Always will be.

i’m glad ur enjoying it ken!

thats why many more ceos have duke degrees than columbia degrees

yep i totally destroyed this thread…i love it!

Duke is a equally prestigious school outside of NYC, especially in the South. I believe the actual quality of both schools is very similar though. And, last time I checked…

http://www.wsjclassroomedition.com/pdfs/wsj_college_092503.pdf</a>
Duke: #6
Columbia: #11

quote on Columbia: “You’d think undergrads here would have an edge getting into its elilte law
and medical schools. But several other Ivies sent more students.”

It’s funny that Columbia is located conveniently next to Wall Street but recruiters would rather fly Duke and Stanford students in for interviews at their companies’ expense, than tap the resources located close by. It should tell you something.

lol at anyone who claims Duke > Columbia. No, f*** in way is that true. Columbia is a better school academically in any respect you can think of (except maybe med school, although that is arguable). Duke is better in terms of campus spirit, sports, and greek life. Columbia is in NYC, while Duke has one of the most beautiful campuses in a very unpleasant town. Look, the thing about Columbia not attracting WS recruiters is due to the lack of interest, at least compared to a school like Duke, where 40% goes into IB/Consulting. Honestly, there’s no way at proving this, but my personal experience has always been that Columbia attracts more artsy students, while Duke gets more career-driven ones (not saying one or the other is necessarily bad, just different).

The only place where duke has more prestige is in the South. Internationally, it’s not even a debate, and you won’t get much argument out west or in the NE. Midwest is probably more even, but honestly, to claim that Duke has more prestige is a huge stretch. After HYPSM, many would consider Columbia the next most prestigious school. Duke rarely gets that nod. Now, I love Duke and all, but to say that a school like Columbia, which has produced 80+ Nobel Prize winners, is somehow not comparable to Duke is a huge misrepresentation to both of these institutions.

Bottom line: they’re both good

Also, the idea that more CEO’s come out of Duke is hardly believable. Do you have a source for this info?

Logic would point to Columbia as having more “CEO’s” for several reasons. More respected b-school and older institution.

Yeah, I think DevilKnight was being facetious or something. Both schools are on par at the undergraduate level and Columbia blows Duke out of the water at the graduate level. However, I think you’re exaggerating the prestige difference a little too much CNI. Duke is more prestigious in the South and Columbia is more prestigious in the Northeast. In the West and the Midwest, it really depends on the person you’re talking to. It’s tough to measure a thing like international prestige but Columbia might have a slight edge over Duke. But then again so does Berkeley…so who cares?? Duke’s student body isn’t any more pre-professional than Columbia’s. That’s just a missrepresentation. If anything, Duke students are stereotypically known to go the pre-med or pre-law route, not neccessarily the i-banking route.

*** are you guys talking about? Columbia if one of the best known universities in the world. Anyone who’s heard of NYC has probably heard of Columbia.

^^ That’s overstated.

I’d argue that Columbia is more prestigious than Duke among those in the know.

This is close to right. Columbia should be with Penn and Duke and Dartmouth should be with Brown. Also honestly no one knows Caltech, people know Williams (considered possible the best LAC) and Amherst and others, but Caltech is really not known even in very educated circles.

I have no idea why people consider Johns Hopkins better than Wash U. I have 3 friends accepted to both, and they all chose Wash U. It is more selective, and in general I would say they are peers. OP, Columbia is an outstanding University and easily in the elite schools, directly after HYPS…I encourage you to apply.

Here is one measure of prestige – how many students would choose Duke over Columbia, and vice versa? Answer here:
