How does Hotchkiss compare too Exeter, Andover and Choate

Come on Hk dada not sure you know what you are talking about --have you been to each of these schools? seriously. Prestige only matters to parents like you who are hung up on it.

And tom the cat why always put other schools down. there are not 5 languages, but you always think you know everything. There are 6 (spanish, french, german, chinese, latin, greek). And Hotchkiss is one of few schoolsto offer a classical diploma.

Well, pardon me, and I apologize, but the point I was making still holds, doesn’t it?

@bspreppie - at Hotchkiss you can take Ancient Greek and get a Classic Diploma - I recall how envious a Brown Univ Classics professor was that my S had such background. In terms of core courses, I do not see that much difference between schools. You can always have your own research and courses one-on-one at schools like Hotchkiss the way you can at schools like Andover. Many of the teachers are former college professors.

@baystateresident -Yes - I confirm that there is not a separate process of signing up for private teacher conference at Parents’ Weekend at PA. You can set it up independently. The Academic advisor and a House counselor each would have a group meetings for all of their advisee parents. Again, you have to make a special effort to see them individually and school does not facilitate that for you. I found my 10 min. with teachers at Hotchkiss valuable.

At Andover, if a student is changing a course and have permission from the teacher, the paperwork will not be done for you - just like college, it is the student’s responsibility to get the paperwork in yourself to the school office and get to the new class. You do not hand it in to the teacher to handle it.

One is not better than the other. It is different. Some students are better suited in more nurturing environment than others.

Hotchkiss offers Sailing, Andover, Exeter and Choate offers Rowing (Crew) in Sports.

At any of these schools, you will be really prepared for colleges - any college.

hi bspreppie, the point is basically
a) andover and exter are different programs to everything else
b) but all other top schools are very similar in terms of quality program
c) but each school has a different soul.

if you read the post detailed enough, you’ll see that what i am trying to say is “while prestige…” at the end of the day the schools doesn’t have that much difference in terms of result that they produce

Well, these schools are all prestigious, aren’t they? Like it or not, that’s one thing you sign up for when you associate yourself with these schools. Andover and Exeter are just better known for their long history, huge endowments (it was a big deal when Exeter’s endowment reached $1B) and more alumni due to their size. If you don’t care about the “big names”, good for you. Many people don’t, but they are part of the reality we live in.

yeah tom the cat i can admit I was wrong at least in a non smarmy way. Hotchkiss actually offers russian too, so that’s up to 7.

Does Hotchkiss offer English with a grammar component?

Never mind, forget I asked.

One thing I note, as an alumna of Andover. My son went to summer school at Hotchkiss this past summer, and was overwhelmed with how isolated and rural the campus felt, particularly with (at best) spotty wifi. At Andover, the kids have a great town to walk into and then Boston 30 minutes away. My son’s sense at Hotchkiss was that civilization was much too far away.
