I receive plenty of unsolicited communications from headhunters-- these I totally ignore.
For a job candidate who is ALREADY IDENTIFIED, I find Linkedin useful as a supplemental vetting tool when I am the hirer and when I am the hiree. It’s an online condensed CV w links to references.
@dstark…You can go anonymous as BB linked. You do lose the ability to see who viewed you while in that mode but really all you have to do is click back to regular mode after you are done stalking.
LinkedIn was extremely helpful when H was recently changing jobs. He used it mainly as a networking tool to catch up with colleagues and set up meetings for coffee and to expand his contacts. When he was researching companies he was interested in he was able to quickly find contacts that he knew or friends of friends that he could meet to discuss opportunities. It was a very successful strategy.

Every job DH has had except for his first job out of college was initiated by a headhunter calling or emailing him about an job opportunity. I don’t know that he would connect on linkedIn with them but I doubt he totally ignores them either.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a number of mid level business people end up with jobs through linkedIn.
I had someone contacted me because he thought I was attractive. I reported the person.
I do get recruiters contacting me for jobs that are very relevant to my skills, most of them are very legitimate. I keep my resume up to date though.
I agree that temp agencies are another good avenue into the working world. But they should have a LinkedIn profile and maintain it, too. It becomes more valuable over time as you build a network of contacts. LinkedIn is the kind of networking that doesn’t feel sleazy… for the most part, my contacts are people I have worked with in the past.
type in the zip code you live and check box/s on the side for direct hire/temp to hire agencies.
than reach out to as many agencies as you can. you would be surprised what jobs (really good jobs) they have available. if they like you they will screen you…and if they send you to a place for an interview, you have been pre screened by the agency and you may only be competing against 3 or 4 other candidates. it is the only way I hire now.
and I would encourage all job seekers to try this route.
