How Important is Fit to Major?

I think it depends. You don’t get an ABET accredited engineerinig degree, in this case or at Purdue.

But here are the outcomes at Lehigh - interesting read. Click through the bios/linkedin.

any benefit to understanding the customer needs, or just better to let product management dictate the requirements and not overthink?

You would be correct to be cautious of trendy things like college majors. For example, neuroscience, computer game design, and petroleum engineering had their times as trendy majors. Engineering + business combinations seem to be trendy because they appeal to very pre-professional focused students who think that it will maximize their appeal to employers, whether or not it actually does.

My two cents is people who know they want to go into business also getting a solid STEM undergrad education is not a particularly bad idea. The other way around, not so much. But frankly, unlike with engineering, say, there really is not a specific undergrad education you need to succeed in business.

I agree if you are more just trying to hedge your bets between things that seem lucrative/prestigious, that might not work out as hoped.

The OP asked about ECs and engineering.
