how important is GRE writing scores?

Wow, mokhoras, you have stats similar to mine.

800Q/710V/4.5AW
3.98 GPA, Public State U.
Research, tutoring for 3 years.

I think with good LORs and a nice SOP, you have a shot. Your school might have a better rep./prestige than mine, so you would probably have an easier time getting into the top 10. What’s your research like? What places are you looking at?

For what it’s worth, I think that the specifics of the programs are more important for things like graduate engineering school than things like rankings. This may be less true if you plan on staying in academia, but…

Mobiusfrost, i think your GRE is good now that you have 800Q i wouldn’t stress over the Verbal… just work on other things to improve your app

mokhoras: i think you can get into any engineering school of your choice for MS. as far as phd goes though, it really depends on your research experience.

thanks for the advice everyone regarding my GRE scores. since we’re talking about phD admissions here, i have a 3.85 gpa in my physics major, did an REU in physics and 1 semester of research with a prof. i expect my LOR to be average, nothing spectacular. I want to get into the top schools, but am doubtful about my chances
