How is the house selling season going?

Yes, VH, sadly this is nothing new. He’s been a jerk for a very long time. Why should I expect any different? The only saving grace I can hope for is that he is a severe cheapskate, and might not purposely run up attorneys fees (as I have anticipated he might) so he’ll get more in the long run, and sooner.

He was physically abusive as a kid, verbally abusive even to the day our dad died, and now he’s being email/internet abusive. Some things do not change- just get updated with the times.

jym, I hope this will be the end of your problem, after the estate is settled. good luck.

I have seen siblings fight for the smallest things, like a toaster oven.

We’re #1…in foreclosures! The Tampa Bay region real estate market is still a bloodbath flooded with thousands of distressed properties, but there are indications that the region’s market is beginning to stabilize.

[Tampa Bay leads nation in foreclosure filings - Tampa Bay Times](http://www.tampabay.com/news/business/realestate/article1230479.ece)

Artlovers-
I did everything I could when dad was dying to try to rebuild some sort of a relationship. Epic fail. He and his wife took chairs out from under people’s butts at the house after the funeral. And they took every piece of silver they could. I just let it go. Its just stuff.

Sad- they have no kids and very few friends, from what I can tell. I guess I understand why.

What is really sad, is that I am guessing after this is settled we’ll have no further contact.

Sorry- didnt mean to hijack the thread.

And lizard- thanks for taking the title away from Atlanta- I think it was there for a while- it the extended metro areas (not the city and close in 'burbs)

VH - Your home is in the Greater NYC region. I’m sure you’ll be fine.

jym - What can I say … besides “Sorry.” Two branches of our extended family get along great … the other two don’t. Neither pair can fathom what motivates the other pair.

My parents’ house closed yesterday! Hurray! Money “wired” but not showing yet. Probably will show Monday as the “next business day.”

Jym…sorry to hear that you’re going thru this.

"* He was physically abusive as a kid, verbally abusive even to the day our dad died, and now he’s being email/internet abusive. Some things do not change- just get updated with the times.

Having no further contact with someone who has been physically, verbally, and internet abusive to you is not sad at all, it is a good thing. You can’t keep turning the other cheek, there aren’t any more cheeks left. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses and keep bad people out of your life…even if they are related to you. Of course, that is easy to say, but if there is no affection, no kindness or positive trait left in the person, I don’t think the relationship is worth one more thought.

Speaking of siblings, had a predictably horrible conversation with mine yesterday about selling the condo. It could have been sold two years ago for $25K more and almost $25K in carrying costs could have been avoided, but unfortunately she was staying with my mother when the offer came in and she bullied M into turning it down–against our advice–because SHE wanted to be able to use it. S thinks she is a real estate maven, but in fact knows nothing about the sales or rental market where the condo is, although the information is freely available on the internet for anyone who bothers to search. Her H is a lawyer, who said he would handle certain things after my father’s death, but then did not come through and I ended up doing everything. Now she wants him to review the contract. I’m going to have it faxed to him to placate her, but I’m not going to jeopardize the deal because he wants to insert unnecessary conditions. (They have been involved in the kind of real estate deals where they took back financing and so forth. They are SO clever that they managed to have to declare bankruptcy due to their speculations. Of course, after a brief lean period his ginormous trusts and inheritances and the generation skipping trusts for their kids mean that they haven’t the slightest financial concern now, except what to spend their money on faster. But she is one of those people who never has enough.)

By reading this, I am still wondering why siblings are so different in behavior and their life experiences. They were “built” and “raised” the same to begin with, but they ended so much in differences.

In the process of evict some “people” in the house I bought, I’ve learned a lot. One sibling is well educated, drove a new car, owns a home, while the other is penny-less and don’t have too many teeth left at the age of 40, yet another is on drugs and was arrested in OR, she briefly came down to see her brother, who was staying in the house I bought. Returned to OR and called me from JAIL asking ME if I can bail her out? Oh lord, give me strength…

These are incredible stories. How did that sibling of the squatters even get your number, artlovers? Hope they didn’t call collect.

Consolation- can you delicately say you will courtesy copy them on the contract but that you are not looking for any feedback or suggested modifications?

Congrats to m2ck on the closing.

And totally agree busdriver. Thanks for the thoughts. I realize I"ll probably have no further contact with my sib after the estate settles. I am fine with that. Not sure I’ll invite them to any event when my kids marry someday. They never showed up at their bar mitzvahs. I am tired of wasting the stamps.

Its a long story, JYM, but the short version is

After I entered the contract, 45 days ago, I went to visit the property, the brother who don’t have many teeth was there alone. So I told him I will give him a deal if he leaves after my closing. I can not gave him any specifics because I was not legally capable. I even gave him $30 so his cellphone will not be cut off. But a few days after, he called me and he is short of money and has to “rent” the rooms out, I told him not to do it because it will create problems for him. But with his mentally ill head he went to get more squatters into the house and collected “rent”. So when I opened the door on the day of closing, all kinds squatters were in the house, including his drugged sister from OR. I had to hand them my contact info and terms to leave.

I have been living in hell ever since, for about 3 weeks now with those squatters yelling at me every day. Last week, I finally paid them off and clean the house without going through the legal route, except the brother, he needs a little more time as his stuff is all over the place. In CA, its about 2-3 month process to evict some one.

Artlover, start the eviction process now. He will just be needing a little more time, and a little more time, and a little more money, and…there will be no getting him out. Every day you wait is a day you lose. What is there to stop him from just staying there? If you own it, can you start doing some heavy construction while he’s there? Obnoxious things, like painting, replacing the doors (which of course, involve taking them off the hinges for a week). Do you actually have something that forces him out? Or do you have something like, the day you leave, and are actually out, I give you some money?

We do have an agreed move out date, after that the eviction process starts. Actually, I have already started the process, I just did not push the button yet.

Artoversplus…what a story.

Is the deal still going to work?

Things may be perking up around our San Diego area. Friend just sold her house in 4 days, with 3 people wanting to buy. Sold it for more than listing price. She wants to buy in the Phoenix area and was unable to find any houses that she wanted to see that didn’t already have an offer on them. So it looks like they will build.

Those are all good signs!

Wow…can’t find a place in Phoenix…

That’s what I thought…they are looking in Gilbert to be near the kids.

What a change from several months ago…

With firmer prices here, the inventory is coming out of the woodwork, and not much action. Within three blocks of where I live, there are now SEVEN houses on the market!

I have been womdering about that performersmom…

Would inventory start coming on the market if there was improvement in the market?
