Navy Jet Crashes in San Diego Bay [crew ejected and rescued]

So glad the pilots were safely rescued! This happened about two miles from our house - didn’t see anything but I wondered why I heard jet engine noise different than I’m used to this morning. We can easily hear take offs from Naval Air Station North Island. It’s a U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler.

I got a notification about this on Citizen App earlier today. What is going on with planes lately? Seems like something almost every day.

I also saw the notification on the Citizen App about the crash too. I heard the pilots were taken to UCSD hospital. I hope they are ok.

Oh geez, that’s the same base where my son-in-law is stationed. I haven’t heard anything from my daughter today (SIL is part of a helicopter flight crew). First the helo crash in DC and now this - I’m chief mom worrier so any stories about military crashes just amp up my concern about his job!

So thankful the pilots are ok.

According to my local paper, the jet and the crew were from WA:

“ A U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler crashed off the coast of San Diego Wednesday morning, the second crash in four months involving aircraft and crew assigned to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

The two crew members ejected from the fighter jet into San Diego Bay off Point Loma soon after takeoff around 10:15 a.m., according to the U.S. Navy. The two were found about 10 minutes later by the Coast Guard and taken to a hospital, where they were in stable condition.

The aircraft and crew, whose identities haven’t been released, are assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 135, known as the “Black Ravens,” at NAS Whidbey Island. It’s unclear why they were in California.”

We drove over to see if they’d pulled the Growler out of the bay yet; apparently not. We hadn’t realized how close to land it crashed. The bay is in the 40-48 foot range depth there.
