How likely are we to get financial aid?

There is another thread…

Not so sure about the untaxed SS income of the parent being excluded from the Profile. The wording of PI-165A is:

My interpretation of this is that untaxed SS benefits intended for the parents or siblings is included, but those for the student are not included either under the parental or student income.

Since you’re from WA, check into the WUE schools. There are a few CA schools that participate, some of the CSUs I think, but none of the UCs. Check first on the WUE website, but then be sure to go to each college website to see how they administer WUE; for some (eg. UOregon) it is limited and competitive like a merit scholarship, while for others it is automatic for specific stats.

Here are the two momfromtexas threads. And yes it is true that she really took a beating from some more exuberant posters back in the day! I often have wondered if any of them lived to regret their own advice. The specific scholarships mentioned may not exist any more, but the search strategies discussed are timeless.

You might look at some of the Admitted threads for schools of interest for this year’s students to get an idea of where your son falls. Many students have been/are posting their stats and financial aid offers. They may post an early merit scholarship and later post a grant/ loans so you may have to dig to get the total picture. Many financial aid offers are yet to come in so keep checking.

If you need/want significant aid, be sure to focus on schools where your son’s stats are very high, the top 25% or even 10% as others have posted. He may get in a reach school but not be offered much if anything.
