How Long is Too Long? Doctors please chime in

Haven’t been in many exam rooms, but the most recent instance some years ago was at a large practice where the exam rooms had individual heating controls, with the heat turned up significantly higher than the rest of the building.

Wow–sounds lIke folks go to swankier practices than I do. I’ve never been anywhere with warmer exam rooms than any other part of the office. The only time and place I’m offered a warm blanket is when I’m there for an imaging test or sleep study, never a regular office visits. I always bring my own sweater or jackett because I hate freezing.

I will put up with a variety of things at the doc’s office if I never have to have another MRI.

I had an appointment with a specialist today at 11:30 a.m. Arrived at 11:15 because wasn’t sure how long it would take me to get there. It was at least a half hour away. Was in the waiting room until 12:30. Brought into exam room and waited another 45 minutes. PA saw me at 1:15. Doctor came in around l:30. I was leaving the office by 1:45 for my half hour drive home. So 3 1/2 hours away from home for a 10 minute visit from the doctor. I would find another doctor but he’s the only one in this state that does it and I need it badly. There is no way I would put up with that from my primary care physician. And it was freezing in there so when I left I sat in my hot car for a while to warm up.

I would rather wait at my doctors office with a good magazine or book…than be on hold at my house on the phone listening to bad music for almost an hour.

It seems that reduced staffing, or whatever…makes waiting part of the game almost for everything (motor vehicles, phone calls to SS or cable companies…or insurance companies).

Th even tell you that your wait will be 45 minutes…or more.

We have very few of some specialists–Infectious Disease Docs–for example. You’re lucky to get an appointment and then it may be a VERY long wait for a very short visit (basically referring you to go to an out of state med center). All told, I think I was there 3.5 hours (waiting more than 3), just to be told I was too complicated and referred out.

One of the best “warm” medical appointments I had was during recovery for gallbladder surgery…they had a blanket with tubes that spewed hot air like an old fashioned hair dryer. AWESOME.

When I get my infusions, they give me heated blankets and they’re so comfy.

I’m about to “that” patient. Made an appointment yesterday because of one issue and another developed what I think is a completely separate issue in the last 24 hours. I have a feeling I may be admitted to the hospital so I’m going to be the PITA patient.

Best wishes @romanigypsyeyes

Oh @romanigypsyeyes! Hope you’re feeling better soon! You’ve been having a tough time!

Thank you both
No hospital admission… yet. Just observe from home unless I completely pass out.

Hugs to you, @romanigypsyeyes! Go ahead and be that PITA if it gets you the help you need to be well.

Best wishes Romani!

6.5 hours is too long in the ER.

…and counting.

Dang! Wishing you the best, @romanigypsyeyes! That is way too long, especially when you’re in pain. Sending you healing thoughts for a speedy and full recovery!

Romani, I hope you are okay.

@romanigypsyeyes Sending you wishes for a speedy recovery. I hope those doctors and nurses are taking good care of you.

@romanigypsyeyes Way too long! The word “emergency” implies imminence. Sorry you had to go through that.

Thinking of you @romanigypsyeyes, and hoping hoping the docs and nurses are able to make you more comfortable.

Thanks all. Home now. They triage and assess emergency level. I wasn’t dying so to the back of the queue I go.

I was severely dehydrated so lots of fluids and a sleepless night.
