How long would your family's current food supply last following disaster, or food shortage.

Why would I care about cooking if it was a true doomsday scenario? Why couldn’t I just eat canned soup out of the can? Like having hot food would be the least of my worries.

@Pizzagirl, Seriously love that post (#98)!

It’s not the need for hot food but rather can you utilize some of the dry ingredients without cooking them…

I don’t know, PG, I am pretty committed to nottelling’s plan of drinking the good stuff while we wait for the end. There is no excuse for not living as well as possible, as long as possible. jmho.

and I super like your post #98

and all this time, I’ve been imagining PizzaGirl (PG for short) WAS your rap name.

No one has mentioned female hygiene supplies in the doomsday bunker…or diapers, toilet paper.

Remember when Mad Max eats the can of dog food in “Road Warrior?”

Hopefully none of us are using diapers

Well, unless there is an indefinite supply of contraceptive options, diapers may be needed in the future (not sure if baby Judith of *The Walking Dead * uses cloth or disposable).

I’m beyond the feminine hygiene products but not quite ready for the diapers.

A Boy and His Dog

Speaking of food for survival, I seem to remember this movie had a surprise ending.

Ummm…given the talk of The Road, let’s not talk about babies…

I had forgotten the final lines.

Potable drinking water is one of the first things folks run out of. One can get food from canned goods or other supplies, but water is tougher to store.

By the way, have been checking out various freeze-dried foods. Anyone with experience and opinions about Mt House vs other brands? Mt House has a coupon for 1 individual pouch thru 9/12.

H has digestive trouble with dairy and gluten. Many, many emergency supply products have one or both of these items.

I have kind of been paying attention and it looks to me like they use cloth for Judith. I can’t remember any supply runs where they said, “hey pick up a truck load of pampers” but I haven’t seen every episode.

Mountain House is supposed to be the best tasting of the emergency foods. Wise foods is about the worst tasting. They will send you a free sample to try if you request it. They will also follow up with a phone call.

@HImom There are also a number of freeze dried manufacturers who sell individual items (chicken, carrots, pineapple, etc) instead of meals. You can make your own meals to avoid dairy and gluten.

@Madison85 - use nature’s toilet paper, aka mullein

do not use this one:

Thanks. We are being sent a sample entire from Mt House. Will see if we like it and want to continue this route. It seems more efficient than buying and rotating out canned goods. We’ve had a ton of storms already and more on the way. That is the reason we are thinking of getting these freezes-dried items. So far, we’ve always been ok with canned goods for the few times we lost power.

@Greenwitch Thanks!

Some of the names are funny and sound inappropriate for wiping…

Common Name: Common Mullein, Great mullein, Torches, Candlewick plant, Hag’s taper, Aaron’s rod, Jacob’s staff , Our lady’s flannel, Beggar’s blanket, Hare’s beard, Velvet dock,** Rag paper**, Wild ice leaf, Bullock’ lungwort, Clown’s lungwort, Blanket herb, Feltwort, Quaker rouge - Mullein is from the Latin word “mollis” which means soft; reference to the soft, velvety leaves of the plant.

I still have S1’s cloth diapers. Could use that for the grandbaby.

I was thinking about this thread while doing errands in town today (thanks cc  I remembered my sons have extra bullet-proof vests. I decided I am thankful I live in the country–more abundance of food and self-sustainable living and fewer people.

In a true doomsday scenario I think being crowded in a city would get ugly very quickly, in addition to the food and sewage concerns. Back to the OP–I have decided there are enough cattle, hogs, sheep and goats locally to feed my township. Basic husbandry and agricultural practices would make that replenishable. Plenty of Amish so maybe we could barter transportation.

Ugly very quickly - yep!-that was Episode #2 of *Fear The Walking Dead.
