How many early admits and how many will be invited for interviews?

Does anyone know

1) How many will be admitted early?
2) Among those early admits, how many will be invited for scholarship interviews?

Good luck to all!

Dear midwest Dad,

I do not think any of us have an idea about the number of early admits. Since about 20% of the freshmen class receive merit scholarships it would have to be well over that number.

College admissions in highly selective colleges is a mystery. Last year a number of NMScholars were denied at SC and some students with lower scores were admitted. About 18% of SC freshmen are in the arts where test scores are not the most important factor in admission selection.

The Schools of Theatre and Thornton are still doing auditions. Those students will not be notified until well into February.

I’m not exactly sure how many people will be in the class of 2014, but in the class of 2013, there were approximately 2800 students (for some reason I want to say 2813, but I can’t find the exact number) and USC had a yield rate of 32% last year, so I’d say there were roughly 8750 acceptances last year. There are 100 Trustee scholarships and 200 Presidential scholarships, full and half tuition respectively. So I’d say about 10-15% were admitted early and interviewed for just those scholarships.

Additionally there NMF presidential scholarships, international scholarships (half tuition), and Associate scholarships (quarter tuition), as well as others. some of which aren’t interviewed for, and don’t have an exact # to give out like presidential and trustee scholarships, so they’re able to give out what they want to whoever they want later and not worry about offering them to students to make up for the number that don’t accept the scholarship/admission.

list of scholarships can be found here: [url=http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/grants_scholarships/undergraduates/meritbasedfo.html]USC Financial Aid - Grants & Scholarships - Undergraduate - Freshmen Only Scholarships/url

and note that just because you’re not admitted early, doesn’t mean you wont receive, or be interviewed for a scholarship eventually.

a very, very high percentage of early admits (meaning first or second wave) are invited for scholarship interviews, I dare to say as high as 100%, but I’m not entirely sure on that.

If I remember correctly for 2012 students, there were 150 spots (or was it 125?) for each of two Trustee candidate Explore/interview days, and for three such days for the Presidential candidates.
So for Trustee candidates there were 300 (if my 150 figure is correct), and for Pres, 450.
That year I believe there were around 125 Trustee recipients who matriculated. (the exact figure may be found in the 2008 freshmen profile)
We figured out at the time that around 70% of Trustee candidates received that scholarship. Others were bumped down to Pres or Deans. (Also, a few Pres candidates were bumped up to Trustee.)
So that means around 210 got the Trustee, and of those, some went to other universities…leaving the 125 Trustees.

These are very rough figures for two years ago, but it may give an idea of the numbers if they will be similar this year. (if budget cuts etc. don’t have an impact)

The 10% to 15% of 8750 students mentioned above may be a tad high by what I remember (roughly from the 2012 year), but maybe my figures are a bit off or interview slot #s were different last year, (I’m pretty sure there were no more than 150 slots per day, for 5 interviewing days for those two scholarships (not counting Deans which require no interview) in 2008). 300 + 450 = 750.

Among early admits…meaning in late January and early February, probably two waves, I think it’s safe to say they all are Trustee or Pres scholarship candidates.

Sequoia, my vague memories match yours. I also remember 150 slots per Explore date, and I remember that they were not filled - they had enough space that interviewees had a choice of dates, so some dates had 125-ish or fewer. So I feel Sequoia’s estimate of about 750 is probably accurate.

From the 2009 Freshman Profile…

Trustee Scholars 132
Presidential Scholars 288
Dean’s Scholars 137

From the 2008 Freshman Profile…

Trustee Scholars 128
Presidential Scholars 332
Dean’s Scholars 117 Admit rate: 21.9

There are many other merit scholarships. Our local USC Alumni Club of Atlanta gave five partial scholarships last year which did require interviews. Also, there are Panhellenic, SCions, Alumni, ethnic group, religious and awards from the various schools.

Thanks for those figures Georgia Girl.
It will be interesting to find out whether those figures will be higher this year. Students who are offered the big scholarships may tend to opt for USC rather than other high ranking schools, given the present economic climate.

On the Facebook page last year there was a thread about selection of colleges and where students decided to attend. I printed out the thread for USC. If you think there would be interest I could type out part of the list and you can see what choices these students had when they selected SC. Naturally, this is not official and there is no way to check the accuracy of the information posted.

Let me know if any of you wish me to copy the list here. No real names will be used.

Georgia Girl - do you still have the list? I’m curious as to what other schools students rejected for SC. Thanks!

This is a list I copied last year. Sources were CC, Facebook and reports on another SC board. Most posted choices and gave real names. However, I have no idea if these comments are true or false.

Does anybody know whether USC has given all the scholarships for Fall 2010 till now, or whether it will give some more later on, e.g. international scholarships?
And did anyone here get a scholarship, other than Trustee or Presidential>?

I got Dean’s. :)

hmm it’s not up there, but i know someone (F) who turned down mit and penn for usc.

Thanks again, Georgia Girl!

Wow, if those are true, USC rocks at attracting students from those other top-tier schools :)

blissfulting,
There is still part of the list to type. Due to the economy I feel many more students will choose a university this spring which offers the best financial package.

One confident student remarked he only applied to SC!
