You are a greater fool than James. Cuba Russia Nam were all communist. Don’t try to rationalize their actions, because its simply impossible to ignore millions upon millions of dead people due to failed economic principles and opression. Communism is possibly the worst form of government.

you didn’t read my post.
I was referring to the early version of communism, also known as Marxism, which bears little resemblance to the communism we often refer to today.
i did NOT rationaliz their actions in any way.

i think that there’s some scientific force that controls everything and makes the universe spin… that’s god

i don’t believe in organized religion… it’s for people who are weak and need to be led like sheep

I laughed.

Reeze: “i don’t believe in organized religion… it’s for people who are weak and need to be led like sheep”

I am a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Do you believe that I am weak and need to be led like a sheep?

Christianity is essentially for followers…the rank and file masses have no prerogatives over the religion

Well, essentially, and not to burst your bubble, everybody is a follower… good leaders, usually, are exceptional followers.

religion has been a source of control for those in power.
The crusades, in which Pope urban II called upon the knights of europe to march on Jerusalem, are one such example of religion used by the powerful to harness the masses.

such uses of religion have resulted in both advances and setbacks.

This post makes me realize that you HAVE NO IDEA about communist history.

Amen. I’m not going into detail, but I am EXTERMELY anti-communist. Too many Americans take their freedom for granted.

I know plenty about communist history. It’s just that most of the ‘communist’ countries that rose up during the 20th century did not follow the principles of marxist communism.

according to wikipedia:

Taking for example the U.S.S.R, it failed to do every one of those things. It granted very little freedoms. Government censorship and the gulags come to mind.

Therefore, the U.S.S.R cannot be classified as an example of marxist communism.

I’m not defending communism; I’m defending the fact that Karl Marx did not support the extremist totalitarian style of communism that Stalin brought to Russia. Just making that clear, I’m sorry if my comments were misleading

Communists run under a different moral banner than others do. They adopt a Hegelian perspective, and it is not entirely correct for you to say that “Communism is possibly the worst form of government” because “millions upon millions of dead people.” To them it was perfectely justified. It is only in your morality that communism was immoral.

What if I’m not a relativist, and I think that murder is objectively wrong?

Ari: Good job on not being a relativist! Murder is objectively wrong, Communism is objectively wrong.

neverborn,

Wow, way to be condescending to your elders.

No, communism isn’t objectively wrong in the same way as murder. Communism does have certain good traits, even in actual practice. Murder, on the other hand, is ALWAYS troublesome to the society at large.

I’ll agree with UCLari.
murder, both in theory and practice, has never “helped” society.

but if we develop the same mindset towards religion, then we find that it is a issue of relativity.
those who worship religion will try to rationalize the mistakes that religion has made and point towards its accomplishments, while those who do not will put attention on the mistakes.

Religion and Communism are more of the same on a philosophic level. In religion you sacrifice yourself for some non exist god or whatever…In communism you sacrifice yourself for a replacement for society, god. Have a good day.

everkingly, yes I do. Find your own meaning of god, don’t have some figurehead brainwash you to think something that they want you to think. Organization religion is possibly the biggest scam of all.

Reeze: I can see where you’re coming from. After all, I, too, once shared your belief that those who could not think on their own turned to organized religion. However, I assure you that I am more than able to think for myself. You may not know this but I was not born or raised Catholic but instead found my faith after years of research and philosophical pondering. I would greatly appreciate it if you didn’t make such overgeneralized statements because for all you know I or another member of an organized religion may think more for themselves than you.

“Find your own meaning of god”

God is not what you want to make him out to be. God created us, not the other way around. If we should all be able to find our own meaning of God then there would be BILLIONS of meanings of God that, depending on the person, would contradict one another.

If god created the universe than who created god? Believing in god is really just shifting the burden of definition away from the creation of the universe. People may answer, “Well he’s god and so does not need creation.” Why then do you assume so arrogantly that the universe needed creation more than your god? Maybe the universe is what you perceive as god.

I think the whole idea of god is really like the expression, “if a tree falls in a forest with no one around does it make a sound?” We do not experience god in our lives. Does this mean he does not exist? No. However, it does mean that his existence is pretty irrelevant to our lives. So whether you do, or don’t believe in god it doesn’t really matter. If you want to attribute things like death to a god then fine go ahead, but it doesnt make any difference. It’s all just trees falling in a forest, no one can hear them.
