Right answer wrong explanation as the kids down the street say My B.
You can be singular or plural but it gets the plural for of be generally.
You also wouldn’t say “Each of you is unique.” Or maybe you would, it sounds really awkward though

I think I’m applying to 4
NYU ED, Cornell (double legacy, but not sure I’d want to go there), Lehigh, and still pondering the fourth. :P

“How many schools is each of you applying to?” just sounded wrong to me, as does “Each of you is unique.” Could someone provide some solid facts on this subject so as to save me from making such a tragic mistake in the future? :p

How many schools in all including EA/ED?
9

What are they?
Northeastern University, Boston University, Clark University, Suffolk University, Umass Amherst, Emerson College, New England School of Communications, one of my local CC’s, and Syracuse University.

How many essays in all?
No clue… I should figure that out soon.

How many of them accept common app?
7

How many Early action/decision?
7 Early Action, I’m not doing any ED

@eobaggs

Well, I don’t have any “solid facts” for you, just an 800 on SAT Writing…

The word in question would be “is.” As we all know, verb and subject must agree. Since the sentence is inverted, the subject of the sentence would be “each.” This can be shown by rearranging the sentence to say,

“Each of you is applying to how many schools?” (Sounds awkward, but trust me, it’s technically a sentence)

Whenever each is used as a subject, it is essentially a singular noun (Alred, Brusaw, and Oliu, The Technical Writer’s Companion 291). Think of it as grammatically equivalent to “every one.” Would you ever say, “Every one of you are unique?” No. So the word “each” must be treated the same way. Do not try to get your verb to agree with the word “you.” “You” is not the subject of the sentence; it is merely a part of the prepositional phrase “of you.”

However, when “each” follows a plural subject, it takes a plural verb. Eg: The triplets each have their own defining characteristics.

So, I hope that settles it- the OP’s thread title is grammatically correct for all intents and purposes.

Oh and 100th post! YAY :)

I’ll probably apply to 10 schools (4 reaches, 4 matches, and 2 safeties).

Wow, rules like that are why I hate the English language.

Just invert the question (answer it), and you should have no problem with these. :)

Applying to 10 from CA and 4 schools that don’t accept the the CA.

UCB, UCLA and UCSD - do all of them use the SAME application form? Or do I need to apply 3 times?

^ They all use the same application. You check off which campuses youre applying to.

10, UChicago, NU, Bowdoin, MSU, Wisconsin, Alabama, Pitt, nova, Miami, and TCU. Lots of essays haha

right now i’m considering 11 schools which i think are all good candidates, however, i would like if possible to maybe narrow it down to 7 schools:
Holy Cross, Bucknell, Cornell, Villanova, Fordham, Stonehill, Fairfield, Boston University, Geneseo, Loyola MD, and U of Scranton (free application!!!)

applying to 14. i hate my life

About 12. That is including 2 combined degree programs (BA/MD). But there are more than 12 applications because I have to first fill out the common app + supplement plus about 5 more additional applications for special programs such as BA/MD and guaranteed admission. It really sucks. About 20 essays I would guess, I haven’t really counted. Actually, probably more than that.

Twelve schools, plus MIT and four UC’s, so total seventeen schools.

How many: 8
List: Northeastern, Boston University, American, Bentley, Loyola Chicago, University of Denver, Marquette, U of M Twin Cities.
Essays: 6 (2 from common app, 3 “why this school?”, 1 longer supplement essay)
Common App: 6 use it, 2 individual college app
EA/ED/Regular: 1 rolling, 3 EA, 4 regular

“How many schools is each of you…” is right. Anyway I only have 5 definite schools narrowed down because I am so in denial about “safety schools” that I am probably screwing myself over

15 in total, 12 on the common app (3 UCs IS)
I don’t know which are matches, safeties and reaches.

12 total: 5 common app, 4 CSU, 2 UCs, and 1 independent app.
