How much do SAT II scores matter?

About Latin SATII, how similar is it to National Latin Exam? Are they mostly kids who got a gold medal in NLE who take Latin SAT?

my son had 3.5 years of latin when he took the Latin test in Dec. of his Jr year. He had not won a Gold metal on the NLE, but scored 770 the subject test.

My son won a gold medal on the Latin III NLE - only two wrong. He has not taken the SAT II because he thinks that he still needs more instruction to have a chance at an 800. His teacher told him that the curve is not very generous - not sure about this. He may take it next fall, although he already has three perfect subject test scores and he should probably start to focus on his applications.

gourmetmom- you may want to check the subject test calender- maybe it has changed- [it has been 6 yrs] but when my son took it Latin was only offered in June and Dec.

You may be right, menloparkmom. I haven’t checked the 2011-2012 calendar, but it is probably similar this year. It’s really just as well if he can’t take it - three is plenty.

My son will take Subject SATs in English Literature, Math Level I, and US History next weekend, even though he is applying to theater programs that don’t require them. We figure they can’t hurt. He has finals this week, and will not have much prep time. If he does moderately well, but not spectacularly, on the Literature test, he will probably re-take it next fall (and prep a little). He is not taking math next year, and will not re-take that. Even though he is not in the AP US History section, he has a lifelong interest in the subject, and an excellent knowledge base, so we thought he should give it a try. If he does well, he might try the World History test next fall (especially if other scores are a little disappointing). If all his scores are disappointing, then he’ll simply attempt one more round of SATs, and take the ACTs. My theory is that good scores can only help, while disappointing (I don’t foresee anything truly disastrous) ones can’t really be used against him. I think he should try to turn in a good performance on the Literature, because that would look good on a theater application. Good history tests would show some dimension. He will probably ask his history teacher to write an additional recommendation, where certain schools want someone in addition to adviser and theater arts teacher. The recommendation’s credibility would be enhanced by a good standardized test score.

How about the 2012? Do we need to take two subject tests ?

So I got a 760 on math level 1 and I’m still waiting for my chem scores. Should I take math level 2 next year? They said that an 800 in math level 2 is the 93% whereas collegeboard said that I was the 96%. Does it make sense to take math level 2 just to get a higher number, but not a better percentile?

The National Latin Exam according to my younger son has a lot of questions about Roman history and mythology - it’s the only reason he scored so well on it every year. I think the SAT is a much better test of how much Latin you know.

giatns4210, I’m pretty convinced colleges understand why the percentiles on the math SATs are they way they are. I think if you know the material and can get a reasonable score (say over 700) on the Math 2 you should do it and not worry about the percentiles. If you are applying to certain schools (mostly tech schools) they may even require or prefer it.
